Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California insisted that she had not been absent from the Senate when asked about it by reporters on Tuesday, according to Slate and the Los Angeles Times.
"No, I haven't been gone," she told the Times' Ben Oreskes on Tuesday when asked how her Senate colleagues have responded to her return. "You should follow the I haven't been gone, I've been working."
Oreskes then asked her whether she had been working from home.
"No, I've been here. I've been voting," she said. "Please, you either know or don't know."
Feinstein then reportedly deflected a question about lawmakers calling for her to resign before an aide wheeled her away.
Feinstein's office did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
The 89-year-old senator returned to Washington last week after nearly three months, allowing Democrats to advance a series of President Joe Biden's nominees through the Senate Judiciary Committee after Feinstein's absence had caused a stall.
During that time, some House Democrats including Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and Ro Khanna of California had called for her to resign.
Feinstein has long faced questions surrounding her ability to serve, owing to both her health and a series of public lapses in her cognitive abilities.
Insider asked the senator in December why she had decided not to seek the position of Senate president pro-tempore , a role that typically goes to the longest-serving senator from the majority party.
Feinstein appeared unaware that she had already issued a statement through her office on the matter, prompting an aide to intervene.
"Okay, well then, I guess it's out," said Feinstein at the time.
Feinstein announced in February that she will not seek re-election in 2024, and several prominent Democrats including Reps. Adam Schiff, Katie Porter, and Barbara Lee are running to replace her.
Feinstein has more than a year and a half left until her term expires in January 2025.

It's time for her to be home. Permanently.

This is just sad.

Okay ill explain this again.

1. The way the rules are as explained by senator white house is, the same rule that prevents her from having a temporary replacement on the judiciary committee is the same rule that doesn't allow her to be replaced permanently even in a special election if she were to resign.

2. The only way democrats have a majority is the scenario where she has returned and is able to vote.

3. Calling for her to resign is basically handing Republicans the ability to block any actually good judges, only GOP approved judges would go through from now on until the end of her term.

It isnt until they drop dead. I think it is just having the majority that matters. Dems are fine with John Fetterman being in office. And ignore any cognitive issues he has for the same reasons since it gives the majority in Senate.

Just so I dont get called a Republican for saying that about Dems. Will say GOP do this to with their protecting George Santos even after he got arrested just because he is a number for their team to keep the majority in the house. The teams just want their numbers so they can push back against the other team in any political fight.

If I remember right, her district is most likely safe for another Democrat to win. She could have retired years ago. Now that she didn't, we are in this mess now.

Shes a senator. Her district is the state of California. Governor Newsom would appoint a replacement, which would be the third time he had done that.

She is Senator. So it is a general state election. So it is pretty much a guaranteed win for any Dem running until they die or retire over there.

Omg. No she can't.

You read this and still responded saying she can be. The republicans are using a rule that doesn't allow her to be replaced neither temporarily or permanently.

As far as i know no she can't vote for her own replacement. I only know what senator white house said.

He said the rule doesn't allow a temporary or permanent replacement. To maintain their majority the only scenario is if she is there and voting for her entire term.

Normally republicans would allow it in the past and vice versa if the democrats were the minority.

They haven't put out all the particulars about it for some reason I was only able to catch him talk about it once.

California Democrats are big fans of the way she flew the confederate flag over San Francisco. They can't get enough of that shit.

(Less flippant: California has a top 2 primary system for Senate races; she might lose a strictly Democratic primary, but can win a general against a left wing challenger with Republican votes.

Its nearly impossible to unseat an incumbent. Especially in primaries. The amount of name recognition and cash on hand they have before the race even begins is usually insurmountable. For every AOC you have that successfully dislodges an incumbent there are dozens, hundreds of people who try and fail.

Anyways, Im no fan of Dianne but as long as shes able to show up and vote Yes to judicial nominees then I dont give a shit if she even knows her own name at this point. The saying is make hay while the sun is shining but the fact is if you really, really need that hay, you keep making it through the night, when the clouds come out, when the raindrops start pattering down, all the way until the storm hits and you literally cannot make anymore hay. We are stuck with her and the Dems need to get as much possible done before she or any of their other geriatric members croaks.

Also to give her at list the tiniest shred of benefit of the doubt (more than she probably deserves but whatever), shes been back a whole week by now, it seems weird for them to only be asking her now if she got messages from colleagues. I can see how an old person with, lets call them deteriorating faculties, might get confused by the question. It certainly seems more likely to me than she forgot the entire last 3 months.

Fetterman is recovering and also won a relatively close election. Feinstein will only deteriorate further, and CA's jungle primary structure means there's no risk of a Republican winning
