there's one way to make this worse.

every time you fight these things, they drop a totem, and 99 of them can be turned in for the thing you want.

No, thats better. If you get a totem each boss thats guaranteed progress. If a drop chance for an item is 5% you will get that drop approx 1 in 20,000 kills

I don't remember this at all. There were rock golems you need to grind?

Unless you mean the things in the field. They died pretty fast though.

The person is right on their math. You have not taken into account the desire detector penalty a game forces on you for somehow knowing what object you want. You will get the even more ultra rare .01% item twice, before you get the 5% drop item you desire in those 20k battles.

'it's great for ffxiv' is exactly right, and that's the game i had in mind when i said that. something can be good for a game but bad for its players, and to me, that is the example, right there.

like let's say you don't have the 99-totem reward, the totems at all, and you don't include the drop as part of any achievement. you have less people playing that specific content, and stopping after 10 tries, 20 tries, 30 tries. actually giving up and doing something else.

i think a lot of people incorrectly view it as a safety valve. i see it as abusive of completionists. being guaranteed to get something after 99 tries isn't an act of mercy, it's a curse.
