True but it tends to make things infinitely easier.
the classes that can heal are almost always better off doing something other than healing.

the only real exception to this is when an ally is at 0 HP and goes down

This is honestly the main problem with healing in 5e. As designed, healing has been nerfed to the point where its only real value is to play whack-a-mole during major fights. Which starts getting stupid after a while.

People have tried to fix that by adding penalties for being downed, but that honestly just makes it worse. The real solution is to make healing more useful in and of itself.

The main reason they designed it that way was on the assumption that most people don't want to play as "the support class", and the game shouldn't require every party to have one to survive. But that ironically makes things much less fun for players who DO want to play the support role, because the system as it exists makes them kind of useless.

Sure, as you suggest Clerics can do stuff other than healing, but that misses the point that some players WANT to be the healer, not just the slightly different flavored blaster/controller or the variant version of a magic Rogue, Druid, or Wizard.

To be fair, back when d&d still meaningfully bothered with things like mundane damage types, crushing weapons tended to be effective against the undead, whereas slashing weapons were weak against undead.

Starting as a new player makes it a whole-ass college course lol

I can see people who have come up for years and years reading and researching 3.5 stuff, but speaking from experience, it's damn near impossible to get into 3.5 as a new player on your own. 5e already has a lot of info, but it's not half as much as 3.5 lol

Edit: I should clarify that I have a friend who's obsessed with 3.5 and DM'd a secondary game on off-weeks for some of my main game's players (including the main game's DM as a player), and I have never felt dumber in my entire life than I did when trying to find a good balance of traits, magic items, etc. for my character. I basically just had to look up a template after the third four-hour research session. I'm the kind of guy who gets paralyzed by choice.

Yeah, I'm the exact opposite of that. Math is by far my weakest subject. Charts and tables full of numbers make me feel like I'm being tricked somehow. My main focus in D&D is the character flavor and world stuff. I'm the type to take suboptimal spells on my sorcerer just because they fit his theme better. I don't even have fireball.

I like that 5e is a lot more straightforward. Even with the large array of magic items, they can be pretty easily separated into categories. It can also be customized within reason (as any tabletop/pen and paper game can be) by making requests of the DM.

My assessment from personal experience is that...3.5 is more for math people and min/maxers, whereas 5e is more for mainstream RPG/video game player types who want to get into a more customizable, open-ended experience without dying under 500 tons of reference books.

All of the casters, if you want them to be. They have variants of each of the classes that take them in a different directions, and that includes being more supportive.

Several of the full-caster classes in 5e can do that kind of thing. There are lots of utility spells that can increase your party's attack rolls, armor bonuses, etc.

Bard and Cleric are the two I'd say are most like that, and their spell lists are filled with support options. I've never looked much into druids, but I imagine they're similar.

One of my favorite things to do on my sorcerer, though, is use Metamagic to twin-spell Haste onto two of my party members (as it's normally a 1-target spell and can't be upcast for more targets like Fly and such can be), so I get a shit-load of value for a single 3rd level spell slot. After that, I just throw nukes each turn lol

As another long-time D&D player who is also obsessed with choice, I would highly, highly recommend you go read up on White Wolf's "Mage: The Ascension" tabletop game. The spell system is something of dreams.

Imagine D&D spellcasting, except instead of investing in schools of magic you invest in fundamental forces and then craft your own spells with different levels of each. Want to do fireball? You need 3 levels in "Forces" and 2 levels in "Prime". Want to make someone's shot miss? Just use one level of "Entropy" to cause a part in the gun to decay and the bullet to jam or misfire. At level 4 forces, you can induce friction in another living being such that the very act of breathing feels like your entire body is being rubbed against sandpaper.

Oh, but in this world magic is taboo thanks to the Technocracy, and the very act of casting a spell that LOOKS like magic will cause your very soul to be ripped apart as the Paradox you've induced in the eyes of people through your use of vulgar magic within range reflects off reality and hits you instead. So you need to cast spells that look like mundane events (if you're in public) by manipulating 9 fundamental "Spheres" of magic in any combination you choose to invent your own way out.

It makes me wish I never got into D&D and got into White Wolf instead. Mage makes D&D spellcasting in any edition look like absolute garbage.

I'm lucky enough to have a friend who got deep into all the White Wolf games early, like... back when the Hunter.net was an actual, functional RP community and the actual writers were drip-feeding story beats to the community in-character. He tells me all kinds of stories about his times playing VTM, Mage, Wraith, Werewolf, and even a bit about some of their later games like Demon and... Mummy. It's always interesting to hear.

Funny enough, that's my fine line between a good storyteller and a good DM. There's no such thing as too weak or too strong in D&D. Only a DM with too limited an imagination. Although that all goes away if you're playing a D&D game like Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, or Pathfinder Exiles where the computer shows no such mercy.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

Maybe one day Mage will get its day in the sun, although the VTM: Bloodlines 2 dumpster fire, combined with the Werewolf game's mediocre sales, meaning that day may be a few decades out still.

One of my favorite ways to test a DM is actually to create a character who doesn't focus on combat-heavy abilities, like an illusionist wizard. I'll then use trickery during combat and see how well the DM is able to adapt to that and RP the enemies being deceived in the middle of battle.

I'm a fairly new D&D player, but I've gotten really invested in it since I started. A lot of it is because my girlfriend is basically obsessed with it. It's hard not to get into it when she's so passionate about it, you know? Now I'm kind of an addict, too.

So I'm always willing to talk about it. I just don't have the brain to handle 3.5, it's just not possible for me. I tried lol
