The premise makes absolutely no sense. It's a semi-dystopian future where everybody spends their time in a sophisticated virtual reality existence yet only geek-related pop culture from decades before the story's set is relevant.

The book is literally just the author listing random intellectual property from the 80s he likes.

It's a YA book. They're not generally know for sophisticated plot or writing. Are you gonna get controversial and say Twilight isn't well structured next?

Tbf, isn't the whole point of Ready Player One that the guy that created the virtual reality is overly obsessed with the past, including pop-culture from the 80s and 90s?

And knowing more about it is the key to winning a huge prize. It makes somewhat sense but its not something everyone does.

By the time the book begins the vast majority of people had long given up trying to find the Egg

I actually think it's an interesting concept, if executed poorly.

Halliday offers an insane incentive, and in so doing com0letely changes the global zeitgeist. He capitalizes of Nostalgia Culture so hard that he gets the entire planet nostalgic for someone ELSE'S nostalgia. Just l8ke the world they're in is fake, so too are their feelings, attachments, and personalities, as they all end up manufactured by what this Willily Wonka figure liked; and yet they all consider that to be "freedom." There's an infinite virtual world where anyone can do or make anything they want, and yet everybody just remakes stuff from the 80s because they think that's what they should do.

There's definitely interesting themes and messages to be found, there.
Too bad Cline isn't nearly talented enough to do them justice.

Ill never forget when my friend dragged me to the movie saying it was the most amazing book ever.

  1. The fact that the girl in real life ended up being basically hot with just like a birthmark on her eye. WOW that truly sends the message of loving someone for their personality!
  2. A fanboy can always spot a hater. was an actual line said in an actual movie and it was meant to sound cool.

I doubt Spielberg actually directed much of the movie. Especially with how much is just CGI. They probably gave him a truck load of cash to put his name on it and he said "sure, why not" then passed most of it off to the second unit.

The ending pissed me off. Limiting time in the game. Billy can't walk in real life, he gets to feel like he is walking in the game. Lets take that way on some random day I picked up. John, really feels like she should be named Emily but he family is not supportive. She can be Emily in the game...oh sorry not on Wednesday.

I don't remember either of these in the book

honestly I'm a little curious what the movie actually is... not enough to watch it, but I read the book far before the movie was even a thing and it honestly just felt like a sorta cheesy nostalgia friendly action story. Nothing groundbreaking but it has a coherent plot, a somewhat interesting world, and was just generally fun to read even if it's not some sort of literary masterpiece. And then after the movie came out all of a sudden everyone is acting like it's the worst thing ever and that it's nothing more than a list of every piece of media released from 1980-2000

very weird feeling

So apparently the second book starts with the main character overhearing people talking shit about him and his friends, so he goes all "nothin personnel, kid" and pulls out his uberhax katana and kills them in a non PVP area because he can do what he wants. It also pretty much bankrupts them because of how the economy works. Now you might be thinking, "wow, when he became the richest, most powerful man in the world he became a real asshole," but the author is actually trying to make you think he's the coolest guy ever.

No that's not in the book. The book at least does a decent job of making the vr world seem like an actual game. The movie depicts a game as imagined by an octogenarian that's only ever heard of kids talking about them.

i prefer his poetry:

All the porn Ive come across
was targeted at beer-swilling sports bar dwelling alpha-males
Men who like their women stupid and submissive
Men who can only get it up
for monosyllabic cock-hungry nymphos
with gargantuan breasts and a three word vocabulary
Adult films are populated with these collagen-injected, liposuctioned women
Many of whom have resorted to surgery and self-mutilation
in an attempt to look the way they have been told to look.
These arent real women.
Theyre objects.
And these movies arent erotic.
Theyre pathetic.
These vacuum-headed fuck bunnies dont turn me on.
They disgust me.

The girl in the tweed skirt and the horn-rimmed glasses....
Betty Finnebowski, the valedictorian!
Oh yes.
First I want to copy her Trig homework,
and then I want to make mad, passionate love to her
for hours and hours
until she reluctantly asks if we can stop
because she doesnt want to miss Battlestar Galactica.
[...] But do you ever see that kind of woman
in a contemporary adult film? No!

And that's fine. There's lots of great examples of nostalgia-bait. I even think the movie is good - the story still sucks, but everything is so well done, it's at least enjoyable.

I remember in RPO, he had to play a perfect game of Pac-Man, and with no explanation of how he's that good, the book proceeds to describe him doing it in the most boring way possible, literally just telling us he does this amazing thing.

There's another instance later where after a battle, they discover a door they have to get in is hovering above a creator(like something glitching in a game) and they can't reach it! But it's ok, because the character immediately after finds a pair of rocket boots that have never been referenced before, and are never referenced again.

The whole book is extremely poorly written, with awful characters and the most stilted writing I've EVER been suggested.

Once Upon A Time in the West was literally by a director that used every scene, and lines he liked from his favorite Western films of the past. Tarantino made a career out of making something he liked from the 70's, and the 80's as well like Kill Bill.

There's tons of YA content with a higher bar than Twilight that has been rewarded for it. Avatar TLA etc. Don't think we should acquiesce to the idea of kids not recognizing or deserving good stories.

That's a fair point, and they absolutely deserve well written stories. I guess my point was more that a well written YA story is more of an exception than the rule, so finding a YA book dumb is a bit like digging into the $5 movie bin at Wal-Mart and then being surprised that the movie is mediocre.

Losing literally everything on death is a pretty steep punishment for death. Idk why anyone would risk doing literally anything that could get them killed.

Especially going anywhere near pvp zones.
