I always thought that the nicotine in cigs is what kills you, but apparently nicotine is just the addictive agent that keeps you smoking. The inhalation of burning smoke is whats actually killing you, or so I just read.

But then by that standard, isnt smoking pot equally dangerous, just not equally addictive?

It's particularly the smoke of tobacco that is carcinogenic, just as chewing tobacco causes cancer in the mouth and gums.

Marijuana smoke is dangerous but big tobacco puts all kinds of fuckin shit in the cigarettes to make them more addictive and all that stuff is much worse for you.

If you grew your own tobacco and smoked it at a similar rate to weed the damage should be about the same. But no one would ever do this.

the tar from cigarettes is bad, it gets trapped in the lungs. tar from weed isnt as bad and not as harmful to the lungs.

smoking anything isnt good for your lungs.

why doesn't someone just make some hippie organic tobacco and sell that

there'd be a market for it

Yes all carcinogens regularly inhaled are extremely bad for your lungs. Nicotine itself is rather harmless to long term health, it's just super addicting.

It exists. It's just not got much marketing and it's very very very very very hard to market tobacco products these days. And because it's organic, it's missing most of the addictive chemicals so it doesn't really satisfy people who were already smoking big tobacco stuff.

So the real market is for people who want to smoke but haven't smoked before who are concerned about health but not enough to not smoke in the first place.

Lots of people go through their lives without getting cancer. My grandfather could go through a carton in a week and still didn't get cancer until he was over 80 years old. I had another grandfather who worked in a coal mine and also smoked like crazy and he never got cancer despite the fact that he'd blow his nose and the tissue would be black. He died in his 70s.

All I'm trying to say is one person not having cancer (yet) doesn't really mean anything. I do wish Snoop a long healthy life regardless.

Also it's expensive as hell, because it needs actual fertile land, instead of being seeped in those phosphorous-based fertilizers that are full of uranium somehow.

I take back my withdraw. According to lung.org, youre actually the one who read wrong. I shouldve double checked before I listened to you:

Smoke is harmful to lung health. Whether from burning wood, tobacco or marijuana, toxins and carcinogens are released from the combustion of materials. Smoke from marijuana combustion has been shown to contain many of the same toxins, irritants and carcinogens as tobacco smoke.

As I've mentioned before, nobody smokes marijuana with the same frequency with which people smoke cigarettes (except huge outliers like Snoop, Bob Marley, etc). Cigarette smoke is dangerous but it's not asbestos dangerous. People who quit smoking early or are only occasionally exposed to second hand smoke are at very low risk of cancer.

But you should know that misrepresenting health facts online is harmful to others that read it. Its just another form of antivaxxing.

Good day.

Varies, I've seen arguments that say it's even worse than smoking because you'll end up doing it more often.

Barring a few exceptions there's not a significant difference in the hazard levels of inhaled smoke from burning different plants. Burning up a bunch of pine straw is just as bad as burning up a pile of maple leaves. This holds true across most plant matter. Tobacco and marijuana aren't outliers here. Tobacco and marijuana are only notable because the smoke also has psychoactive properties.

I love how cigarette filters are often thought to be biodegradable cotton so people leave them everywhere.

But they are actually made from acetate (plastic) and do not biodegrade. When you drop them they will stay there for +12 years unless someone picks them up.

Plus they don't even filter much, if any smoke from entering your lungs, and have been confirmed to be there to make cigarettes only "appear" safer while saving cigarette companies money (acetate is cheaper to produce than tobacco).

https://www.brusselstimes.com/476676/cigarette-filters-do-more-harm-than-good-experts-call-for-eu-wide-ban

Please pick up cigarette butts if you see them.. if you must smoke buy your own tobacco and try a water bong .. it's way more sustainable.

It only exists to fool the testing machines, like the holes in "light" cigarettes.

Nobody is going around smoking packs of dried maple leaves contaminated with lead, polonium, ammonia, plastic, and formaldehyde. Obviously no one is dying from it because no one is doing it.

I would guess that the primary difference is that the typical tobacco user smokes many cigarettes a day, but this is probably not the case with marijuana.

Inhaling smoke is bad for you regardless of the source.

That said, cigarette smokers probably inhale a hell of a lot more of it on a daily basis and cigarettes have a bunch of other chemicals in them so I wouldn't say the two are equivalent.

Probably. It has more nicotine for one thing, so it's harder to quit. I think oral cancer rates are lower, but that's probably because not as many people chew or dip.

Then there's Swedish snus which is likely the "safest" tobacco around. Still some risks but not as many. And it's so much better than the American knock off version.

Personally I love chewing tobacco. Especially if I'm outside working. But I usually dip or use snus.
