Two Democrats in the Texas House have co-sponsored legislation that would require third graders in public schools to have access to bleeding control stations and tourniquets "approved for use in battlefield trauma care by the Armed Forces of the United States."

Representatives Barbara Gervin-Hawkins and Ryan Guillen introduced House Bill 1147 in December, which would amend Gervin-Hawkin's authored "Stop the Bleed" legislation signed into law in 2019 to require all Texas school districts to have stations on handincluding annual training for all students in grades seven and higher.

The bleeding stations would also include chest seals, compression bandages, bleeding control bandages, space emergency blankets, latex-free gloves, markers, scissors, and instructional documents developed by the American College of Surgeons or the U.S. Department of Homeland Security "detailing methods to prevent blood loss following a traumatic event."

Is this a real amendment being proposed? Or is this one of those performative things where they're trying to make a statement? It's being proposed by democrats, but it's also Texas so I can't tell either way.

It's clearly a statement.

Regardless, everybody (adult age, preferably) should know how to apply a tourniquet in case of an emergency. You should also carry one in your personal vehicle, as part of a first aid kit.

Not everybody needs to be experts at the rest of the first aid but knowing tourniquets is the bare minimum that can save life or limb in the event of a traumatic damage to an extremity.

Training like this could save someone's life the next time the cops in Texas stand by and allow a gunman to massacre a bunch of kids again.

"If the House isn't open to passing meaningful gun reform, we need to enact legislation like this that will give life-saving knowledge and resources to our children," she said. "In a perfect world, this legislation wouldn't be needed. Unfortunately, with mass shootings becoming more and more common, it is necessary to give students tools that could help them save a life if they are confronted with this terrible situation.
"While I understand that some members are concerned about young kids being taught these skills, I am hopeful that a majority will understand that this training is necessary to save lives in our schools."

I remember taking a first aid class in Boy Scouts but I don't remember if i was taught tourniquets.

I mostly only remember the guy teaching the class talking about how if your wrist gets cut open, how blood will just squirt insanely far and we all found that shit hilarious. <_<

That bill won't pass in TX because it discourages gun ownership.

It's because of the reason why. They want others to clean up the mess they created and refuse to take responsibility or action for. It'd be manipulative, if it wasn't so damn transpare.

I don't think you're supposed to capitalize filler words like "to" or "a" or "the" in titles unless they start the sentence or title.

Useful skill. It applies to more than just shootings, too. I don't see it as being significantly different from teaching students how to do CPR.

Yeah teaching them first aid is fine.

However it in no way, shape of form is going to help them with the psychological, emotional, mental, etc trauma they'll face in the event of a shooting.

They're kids, not combat medics trained to perform their duties in the middle of an assault.

What this really is is a way to blame the students themselves if they fail to act like people trained for such scenarios in a pretty damn impactful moment of their lives which can/will stick with them forever.

I am SO sick of Texas, and so damn sick of this country.

We've devolved into complete degeneracy and moral depravity. And the part that pisses me off the most is that the people allowing this to happen are going to sleep safe and sound tonight without ever having to be the ones affected by this problem.

Fuck the USA
