Played on Hardcore. The first few chapters were kinda rough, but it smoothed out once I got to the Castle.

Minor Pros:

- Sound design is very good, every gun and kick sounds meaty
- Side Quests in the game are inoffensive, and grant great rewards
- Bolt/Mine Thrower is a welcome addition, even though missing at point blank sucks
- Stealth gameplay is pretty nice.
- The ganado voicing /chanting is great. Adds to the atmosphere.
- Red 9 and Riot Gun, despite being nerfed, perform very well still.
- Ashley's AI is neither better or worse, which I suppose is good.
- All 3 Plagas heads are threatening now, unlike OGs headbiter/spider plagas
- You can keep the Jackets

Major Pros:
- Game looks beautiful, gritty but still lots of color. Loved going through the Village at different times of the day
- Most areas are as good if not better than the original, especially on the Island
- Knife combat is very fun, and perfect parry into multikill roundhouse never gets old.
- The amount of redesigns, reorganizations, and set pieces is refreshing.
- Ashley and Krauser are better characters, and their sections are some of the best in the game
- Chapter 4, 8, 11, and 13 are the best chapters in the game. Also there are no bad chapters.
-

Minor Cons:
- Salazar and Saddler are weaker, less fun characters. I miss the comms banter.
- On Hardcore, the starting Handgun and Shotgun feel very weak, to the point where the Village felt even harder because of it
- The Village in general feels front-loaded in difficulty. Once you get to the Castle, it starts feeling reasonable
- Fire in this game is very weak, and takes too long to for enemies to be set ablaze (except Molotov ganado). Often times they will catch on fire, but still try and grab you.
- Minibosses/ Bosses feel very tanky, except the final boss for some reason
- Game is very stingy on ammo, which makes sense yes, but wtf why only 2 shotgun shells/ 15 SMG ammo drops? Ammo crafting is also pretty stingy.
- Being unable to store ammo sucks. The Attache Case in general feels too small, even at endgame.

Major Cons:
- I think the general combat gameplay feels weaker and inconsistent;
> Gunplay: Handgun headshots feel very bad, since fatal shots don't pop heads, and enemies often take 2-3 headshots to stagger. Poor gameplay feedback on that front.
> Gunplay: Guns in general are weaker/ more balanced than OG
> Melee: Roundhouse is too narrow, and suplexes are very uncommon and not as satisfying since enemies can get rise back stronger
> Knife: Knife kills taking away more durability because enemies are aware of you sucks

- Ganado are very (front) grab happy, and deal a lot of damage before they start choking the shit outta you. crouch dodging them is inconsistent too, and combining it with headshot ignoring common enemies, its one of the most annoying aspects of combat
- The lack of I-frames makes it very easy to get comboed and struck while climbing, jump, etc. Makes Leon feel clumsy and sluggish. This also turns Dynamite ganado into one of the most dangerous, RNG enemies in the game.
- Not a fan of how dynamic difficulty works in this game. You are either getting drops like its a charity, or a single strike takes off 60-70%. Is also feels like enemy health in high dynamic range. I wish it was more subtle.
- The Water Room was one of my most anticipated sections, but it wasn't as good a OGs. Disappointing actually.

In comparison to OG Sections...

OG;

Village: 10/10
Castle: 8.5/10
Island: 7/10

Remake;

Village: 8/10
Castle: 9/10
Island: 9/10

Overall;

OG: 9.5/10
Remake: 9/10

Remake is a great game, and I loved my experience through it despite a rough start, but I honestly think the gunplay/combat isn't as polished and held back trying to balance Leon. I greatly prefer OGs Arcadey combat loop, and I feel Remake would have been perfect if it kept it. OG Leon + Remake Knife and Movement Aim vs Remake Enemies would be a easy 10/10

All in all, It doesnt surpass OG for me, but it doesn't need to, and that is perfectly ok. I now have two great games that are different enough to back and forth with.

It made zero sense for them to have access to Leon's comms. It makes infinitely more sense for Saddler to speak to Leon through mind control. Also, Saddler was a joke in the original.

The weapons being more balanced is a major con? Wut.

I'm really not a fan of how the remake handles accuracy and enemy flinching. Spotting an incoming enemy, firing a shot at the middle of their head and getting hit anyway because the bullet either missed completely or they just shrugged it off feels terrible. I got to the castle a month ago and haven't played since.

What's more important: Making sense, or your right hand coming off?

Regardless of how he does it, He and Salazars presence is low, and they are not as entertaining. Mendez has a similar presence, but his section and fight was entertaining. Krauser of course is better than his OG form. I simply wanted those bosses to play along more.

None of weapons felt amazing to use except the Riot Gun, and eventually the Red9.

In OG, every weapon was pretty OP, so they felt equal but powerful. Leon and his tools in OG made him feel like a 1 man army and it feels good to engage in it combat loop from start to finish.

Remake Leon, despite having more fluid movement options, still made him sluggish in other aspects which slows him down in general. His tools dont feel equal. Handguns + riot gun + main knife feel good enough, but the other shotguns, rifle, smg, and occasionally the bolt thrower dont feel as good as they should be. Combine this with a stronger threat, and Leon feels nerfed. Its probably what they are aiming for, but I dont exactly like how they did it

In OG you could get fucked up just as quickly, but you have a stronger fighting chance.

I agree about it being silly having a direct radio line to each other, but Salazar still had speaker phone intercom throughout the castle but he never says anything memorable, I could do with Saddler being less of a joke character for sure but his presence in noticeably diminished as a result.

I half agree with this, most weapons don't feel as good or are as good sure, but OG 4 was piss easy to the point it was easy to never be in any danger aside from some instant kill attacks. I'm glad they nerfed Leon to make it more difficult this time around but my biggest complaint is that Leon has some weird acceleration where you can move forward at max speed immediately but strafing is like wading through molasses, I assume they did it so it forces you to deal with thrown projectiles and punish you for getting into a corner.

I haven't played the original or many other RE games (only played Biohazard and Village) and I enjoy 4 Remake a lot more than I thought I would. I'm only 2 trophies away from the Platinum - Minimalist and Frugalist which I'm halfway through finishing. I agree with the disappointment of handgun headshots on higher difficulties though - that plus certain enemy spawn points being annoying and losing a chunk of health the instant you get grabbed are my only real gripes. Everything else is great

Honestly, if shotguns blew away enemies on their backs like OG, things might be different. Now it's a ' pump head full of lead' weapon instead of a frontal 'back off and clear the way' weapon

This depends on what handgun you're using. You need a critical to pop a head. If you're using a maxed out SG-09 R or Sentinel Nine, they both have a crit multiplyer and it becomes much more common to one shot guys.

I'm just used to the finishing shot popping a head, even if a plagas sprouts
