So the game takes place in the same setting as BotW (which I have not yet played)

my question is; can I skip BotW and just play Tears? Or is it unique enough that Id be missing out on something? (Storywise, game elements, etc )

There really isn't much story in BotW to miss out on. Some fun worldbuilding and such that fleshes out the lore, which is interesting enough to be worth exploring, but the whole story boils down to "Ganon kicked Link's ass 100 years and kidnapped Zelda, now Link feels better after a big nap. Go wake up the four giant robots that will shoot big lasers at Ganon and then you can stab him and win and save the princess." There'll be some characters and locales in TotK that might not mean as much to you without the background of having played BotW, but as far as I know it's mostly standalone and so long as you can guess that Link ended up stabbing Ganon and saving the princess last time, you're sufficiently caught up.

I mean TotK isn't out yet, and I'm purposefully avoiding spoilers. But in BotW a lot of the story has to do with what happened in the past, how the world got the way it is with Ganon sending monsters to attack the different races of Hyrule and what not, and Link and Zelda's relationship. And I don't think the abilities and powers from BotW are returning, I think it's all new stuff in TotK. BotW is definitely worth checking out, but honestly I think TotK is going to blow it out of the water. As long as you have a basic understanding of the Zelda lore, the holders of the Triforce, and the goddess Hylia, and Demise and all of that, you can probably skip BotW and be fine.

It's a sequel. Same basic map, but a lot of changes and additions. It's a much much bigger game than BotW from everything I've heard.

I wouldn't say you need to play Breath of the Wild(based on trailers for TotK) but I also don't know why you wouldn't. With that said maybe you would get burnt out if you tried going through Breath of the Wild first.

Specifically, talking about playing it, since the leaked ROM isn't legal to possess. Talking about trailers, reviews, or other such material is fair game.

This. BotW is a pretty great game and it still holds up: I don't know why you wouldn't get all of the enjoyment you can out of that one first. IMO there aren't a bunch of games better than BotW sitting around that should be demanding your gaming time such that it's skippable.

No no not that point, I was just curious if that since it uses the same environments in TotK, does it contain (nearly) all of the content from BotW ? If so, it would be redundant to play BotW and I could just go right to TotK

I haven't played it, but I am certain it doesn't. I am sure they didn't reload all of the same shrine puzzles, robot 'dungeons', sidequests, etc: it's a new game that needs to have new versions of all of those things.

The content will be different, I believe. Because the stuff you did in BotW should still be done in TotK Like since you did all the Divine Beast stuff in BotW, you probably wont be doing it in TotK The content would most likely be different since its a different game

Think Link Between Worlds: it uses the same world as LttP, but aside from a few nostalgic throwbacks it's all new content and playing LttP is not in any way redundant if you've played LBW. It's a new game that just reuses a lot of the same environments.

I see that makes sense. Ok sounds like I should play BotW then.

TBH you'll probably get burnt out and not want to play TotK for a while afterwards

Well I didnt play BotW for how many years now so I will probably wait before playing TotK as well

But you already own Breath of the Wild so why not play that now while you wait for Tears of the Kingdom?

It won't have the same content so just play Breath of the Wild and wait until somewhere down the line to get Tears.

I also have Metroid Dread I really wanna play too. Need more time for games :(
