Lot of buzz that Shanahan may not return next season, and IF he doesn't return, Spezza seems to be first in line. A lot of this is sourced speculation from a lot of TOR fans on forums and whatnot.

Columbus isn't a hockey city. It's barely a pro sport state. All about that college level.

Until that changes, pro athletes will likely have their agents not speak to Columbus.

That said, there may be that image out there (which is too bad). I've lived here for 15 years and pro sports are huge here (Bengals, Reds, Guardians, Cavs, Browns, etc.)

i was in columbus for their second and third seasons. they were absolutely a hockey city. they're pretty much the textbook example for why the new draft rules are infinitely superior to the ones from the 90s expansion era. the fans held on to hope for a long time, but the team just never had the chance to compete.

The lack of salary cap really screwed the Jackets, as their expansion draft pool was literally the worst person on every roster. Vegas and Seattle got some really good players because of teams needing to shed cap space. Totally different era.

Teams also got to protect 9 forwards, 5 defensemen, and 1 goalie or 7 forwards, 5 defensemen, and 2 goalies vs Vegas/Seattle where it was 7 forwards, 3 defensemen, and 1 goalie or 8 players of any position and 1 goalie.

And Minnesota was drafting at the exact same time.

(Although Minnesota managed to make the WCF in their 3rd year)

I can't believe there's people out there seriously trying to argue that Bobrovsky would suddenly be a Top 5 goalie in the NHL again if the Panthers win the Cup and he wins the Conn Smythe.

Bobrovsky has always been streaky. He is amazing for awhile and then implodes and does it again. He's shown the ability to steal playoff series before.

He's been absolutely terrible in Florida in 3 of the 4 seasons he's been there and he still wasn't even a Top 10 goalie last year by most metrics.

There's absolutely no reason to believe this heater he's suddenly on is going to last beyond whenever the playoffs end for Florida (hell I'd argue given his history there's no reason to believe it'll last past the current round until shown otherwise) and continue throughout next year.

There's no way there isn't at least 5 other goalies in the league right now that people wouldn't take over him.

If we are being realistic, if you aren't doing a tandem, how many easy number one goalies are left in the NHL? Like could we name 10 goalies we would want to start 60+ games with a meh backup? A goalie you are willing to pay 6+ million a year?

I mean there's only 7 goalies this year and 5 goalies last year that even played 60 games to begin with, so absolutely not lol.

Carey Price I feel was the last goalie that you paid a near max contract to. I think the analytics kinda prove splitting your goalie budget into like 4 mil for one and 2 mil for another is the best bet.

I didn't think of that. The new expansion rules are 100x better than before. Tampa, San Jose and Ottawa suffered TERRIBLY their first while too with the old draft rules.

But it is true. I don't live in Columbus lol. The question remains then: Why do bona-fide stars not want to stay in Columbus? If Panarin and Bobrovsky were still on the team, they could be scary good come playoff time :(

Yeah I think those two were more Columbus being a "victim" of circumstances than anything else. There's no way they were going to match either of those contracts, and it might have sunk the team if they did.

Like since then they've landed Gaudreau as an FA (over a team even closer to his home), Werenski re-signed for 6 years (even though he easily could have forced his way into a shorter contract if he wanted to leave), and Laine has openly discussed how much he likes it there.

With Florida in the first round beating the greatest regular season team in history in seven games, the law of averages had to come into play somewhere.

Honestly I find sweeps to be kinda exciting. Only one of those games was a route so they haven't been just a cake walk. The Florida/Canes series has been super fun to watch.

florida after going down 1-3 is just running the gauntlet. vegas has been great too but the panthers are playing with an other worldly determination. vegas will be favored in the finals but idk if panthers will be denied

Fun fact: Despite being eliminated in a 4-game sweep instead of 5 games, Carolina actually played more minutes of game-time against Florida (321:38) than Toronto did (318:34).

Looks like Game 1 of the Final begins on June 3. Probably going to be a hot one lol. I like Las Vegas' chances haha (I don't like just saying Vegas :p)

another tape delay game for me tonight. the vegas fan in me wants to see them close things out, but the hockey fan wants to squeeze as many games out what's left of the season as possible.

but a dallas win tonight into benn coming back at home for game six? that would make me at least a little nervous.
