Trans cyclist Austin Killips took victory in the Tour of the Gila womens race with transphobes and gender critical activists raging at the result. Killips secured overall victory in the Tour of the Gila in New Mexico after winning the races gruelling fifth and final stage on Sunday (30 April). The 27-year-old rider, who heralds from Chicago and only took up competitive cycling in 2019, finished 89 seconds ahead of Italian Marcela Prieto and also took home the Queen of the Mountain jersey. As reported by CyclingNews, Killips broke clear in the final few minutes of racing on the Gila Monster stage, a 110.9 km (65.9 miles) from Silver City to Pios Altos. The Tour of the Gila is a 36-year-old elite race sanctioned by the sports world governing body, the UCI. This year marks the first time the race has offered equal prize money, with a purse of $35,350 (28,145) available in both the mens and womens competition. Reports suggest Killips took home around $8,000 for winning the race, as well as an additional $800 for taking the title of Queen of the Mountain. This win was possible thanks to the community and connections Ive been fortunate enough to build over the years through bikes, Killips said in a lengthy social media statement. She continued: After a week of nonsense on the internet Im especially thankful to everyone in the peloton and sport who continue to affirm that twitter is not real life. I love my peers and competitors and am grateful for every opportunity I get to learn and grow as a person and athlete on course together. Hug your friends, ride bikes together, and never forget that a better world is possible, she added.

Transphobes were, of course, outraged by Killips victory and quickly decried the win as cyclings Lia Thomas moment. The comment referenced the controversy which surrounded swimmer Thomas, who was the first openly transgender athlete to win an NCAA Division I national championship after taking victory in the womens 500-yard freestyle event. Bigots were angered by UCI guidelines which state trans women are allowed to compete in womens competitions if their testosterone levels have been below 2.5 nanomoles per litre for at least 24 months. The average testosterone level for cis women is between 0.5 and 2.4 nanomoles per litre. Former British Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies, who has campaigned to keep trans women out of sport, described Killips win as disappointing and blasted the UCI as not fit for purpose. Issuing support to Killips, US Olympic rower Kendall Chase called the rider a Queeeeeeeen whilst pro road cyclist Ayesha Rosena Anna McGowan simply commented a heart emoji under Killips Instagram post. Killips victory comes amid increased scrutiny of trans athletes, with World Athletics taking steps in March to ban trans women from competing.

There's not even a point to the testosterone limit because a trans woman could permanently have less testosterone than 99% of women and sportsmanship enthusiasts would still be crying about bone density.

Do you deny that men have bigger skeletal frames, denser muscle fiber, and thicker tendons?

Because they hate trans people. Doesn't matter if she fits all of their rules, because in their eyes she's not a woman. We've seen this dance before.

There's ciswomen athletes that have testosterone like 3-4x the average and nobody cares or subjects them to the same level of scrutiny. And nobody ever talks about the trans athletes who lose.

We need to create sub-categories for all these factors, then further sub-categories for combinations of traits! It's not fair, those runners with longer legs or body builders with higher muscle density preform better!

Yeah that was as generalized as you can get it. I just meant they're drastically different. And it's very clear what's going on. I'm not saying they can't compete at all but it does kinda of fuck over the other women for certain. If you can't see that, I don't know what to tell you.

They're also not the end all be all of biological sex. It's well known that some men have XX chromosomes and some women have XY chromosomes.

Sexual characteristics in biology are so wildly varied that trying to put "biological man or woman" into a neat little box just doesn't work.

And on top of that, transgender people going through medical transition are literally changing sex characteristics biologically. Like, the body knows what to do with a change in hormones. All the changes a trans woman sees from HRT are biological.

Many of the greats in sports had/have freakish frames, and yes it is an advantage. But if you think, using your example, Phelps had great times against the men, they were absolutely galaxy shattering against women's times.

It keeps happening though. Whats gonna happen 20 years from now when have enough data to have a conclusion? What if the data points to the trans athlete having a higher win rate than cis?

CE has gotta learn that not everybody that raises a flag about this is a transphobe. I'm all for trans rights, but this is a certain issue that lends itself to possible advantages and the jury is still out on this matter.

Yea that bothers the fuck out of me. For like almost a decade now we've been told trans athletes were going to completely dominate women's sports and instead they have massively underperformed. The most successful woman trans athlete of all time is a swimmer who is ranked like 40th nationally and probably won't even qualify for the olympics, not because she'll be banned for being transgender, but because she won't be good enough to qualify. The testosterone levels is actually a pretty good culprit for this underperformance.

She has been competing in races since 2019 and has only won 4 races. She doesn't have a sky high win rate. It's only news now because this is the highest profile race that she's won.

Just a quick reminder that the right doesn't actually give a fuck about "preserving the integrity" of women's sports, especially considering most of them don't even watch women's sports.

They just don't like transpeople. Everything else they say is just a shield from accusations of transphobia.

I mean, yeah, what if? You can go down the what if rabbit hole all day, but since when did we decide that it's okay to make wide reaching decisions based on hypotheticals?

Like what do we do in the mean time? Trans athletes already have to adhere to a minimum time meeting a hormonal threshold; do we make that limit even tighter? Do we change the hormone limits, or extend the time required for transition? Or do we bar trans athletes from competing period? Are certain sports more prone to trans people excelling, and if so do you just change the regulations for them or should they apply across the board?

This is way too messy to be playing around with decisions based on what ifs and inconclusive data
