I don't really care about Ed Sheeran's music in particular, but if he's found guilty it could potentially be the worst thing ever to happen to music

oh, you've listened to both songs, and think there is no merit, at all? If they are very similar though, then i would agree with the person filing the lawsuit

Yeah, this is a bad lawsuit that could potentially result in a catastrophic precedent if it goes in favor of the plaintiff.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

Sheeran is being sued by the estate of Ed Townsend for copyright infringement on the basis that the chord progression of Thinking Out Loud is too similar to Let's Get It On.

This case is problematic because chord progressions are more of a song building block than anything, which is why people are like "the songs sound nothing alike", and the idea that they can be owned is not good for the music industry as a whole.

Basically if this works, expect a lot more lawsuits incoming.

Tom Petty forgave someone that lifted some parts of his song.
The Rolling Stones robbed the Bittersweet Symphony guy for years because of just like a hum in one of their songs.

Lawsuit is bogus and assuming they make a mistake and Sheeran loses he should ignore the results. Let them try and force it.

Yeah the idea of chord progression being something you can sue over is pretty absurd. It'd be one thing if the songs actually sounded similar but they don't, at all.

It would take someone with decent amount of musical training to even identify similar chord progressions just by ear, this is a very stupid lawsuit

Bad? He literally lost millions of dollars when his copyright was overturned.
The band manager was fighting like fuck about it. But after he died the Stones gave it back to The Verve.

First I've heard of it, but if it is trying to copyright chord progression then the entire music industry is dead and owes the descendants of people who died hundred of years ago billions.

i could have sworn that the legal precedent established by jazz-related lawsuits in the early 20th century is that chord progressions are permissible to copy, but melodies/countermelodies/etc. aren't.
