I've played 5 a few times and beat it a few times. This time I actually spent the time learning every blue spell. The new soundtrack is amazing.

Moving on to FF1. I rented it from a video store way back in the day but was too young to know what was going on or understand it fully. Played some on the PSP as well.

Have fun. I presume the pixel remaster doesn't offer the ability to have MP casting or the OG way of having limited use of spells (9 max). The PSX Origins version did that, I know black mages were kinda useless at times because the player really had to conserve those spells for desperate times, but I still preferred it in that game then just having a pool of MP.

No option. They only have the spell slots. I'm the type that always saves my magic until the boss fights anyways because I'm a dumb ass.

Pricing in the first town is weird. A potion is 40 gil but I got 3 of the 4 members of my party new weapons for 20 gil total.

A rapier is 8 gil. Even the shittiest made rapier in the world that's all rusty is worth more than 8 gil when a potion is 40.

Edit: shit. I accidently bought another rapier after typing this because I was in the shop menu double checking prices. At least it was only 8 gil.

Ha but a potion is more important in the game world than a shitty rapier I feel like. Also since as stated the white mage has limited heals.

After a while you'll be able to buy enough Ethers that you won't care about saving spell slots. They're very cheap and sold in every item store.

Ethers weren't in the original or the Origins version that I recall. That would alleviate that spell saving issue then.

I mean true, but let's pretend there would be a bulk discount for buying multiple rapiers... Is a potion worth 5 or 6 of em? A cabin was either 2000 or 4000 gil. The ratio of rapiers to cabins is terrible. Economy in this world is fucked.

Gonna find out tomorrow. I gained a couple levels and replenished my funds. I spent most of my beginner money on armor and spells. Gonna go back to town, hit the inn, and go kill Garland.

Hi Potion restores 150 and costs 150.

It's a very easy game. 6 and a half hours in, I have around 300k gil, 99x potions, hi potions, antidotes, and ethers. I've done zero grinding, just didnt run from any fights.

I literally auto battle 99% of random encounters with basic attacks without issue. The balance is all off in the game. If you just fight most battles, you'll outpace the game by a crazy amount.

Still love it though.

Maybe they think people still like to take their chances at running away from battles rather than fighting them for some reason. I mean Paladin's Quest/Lennus felt hard at times, but when I realized if I didn't take too many risks and just fought battles instead of trying to run to save time or get in desperate situations, I'd be fine in the long run.

There are some fights where it absolutely makes the most sense to run instead of fight, particularly early on. The Marsh Cave presents plenty of those moments. Or on the earlier part of the game, stumbling across 6 grey wolves and 2 wolves simply isnt worth the damage youll take compared to the gil/exp youll receive.

And depending on how readily available sorts (gold needles) or antidotes are, it can make a lot more sense to run from enemies that can poison you or turn you into stone.

You are right Popo. If you get an especially bad draw in the Marsh Cave it certainly is better to run than to try and take out 9 of whatever. But I was thinking more in a general mindset of if you fight your battles the game will be easier. Even in modern rpgs where the enemy is on the screen I am generally going to fight them on my way to the next thing/town as long as they kick out worthwhile exp. Often bump the game up to hard to compensate for me fighting so many battles. I guess I just like battling, I never see it as boring or grinding generally.

Though granted in Dragon Warrior III or other very old games I did the whole march around the town thing to train but then I came up with some other interesting ways to make the games more dynamic without just doing that.

^Yeah, I agree with that. In most RPGs, including FF1, Im fighting in most battles. It can be just as fast to fight the battle than it is the attempt to run. Might as well just get the experience, particularly with modern FF1s auto battle feature.

So long as you arent in danger, just fight.

It's best to experiment with spells as soon as you get them so you get a feel for how to budget them. Black Mage's best talent is crowd control, and you're better off dropping a single Fira to speed up a large encounter rather than spend HP over more rounds. Just save as many "Temper" as you can for boss battles lol.

I swear that was a moment where I was all I never miss when I have them on and I'd rather spend my time attacking than waste a turn curing it.

Those have been fixed since when they remade FF1 for PS1. Its no different with the Pixel Remasters, the spells all work properly. Also, character stats all properly work this time around. As a result, the thief went from being a nearly complete liability to a functioning member of the party.

I should rephrase my comments better sometimes. But they were in the PSX version, I would have never noticed. A lot of times I try to long term set up these slow jokes that I can respond to myself maybe or someone else can. Anyhow not to get side tracked more, but if I could do a re do. That comment woulda went. H

eh do you think 20 years is enough time to figure out that the spells did nothing in the original game, with people noticing this stuff on the internet and making in depth videos about bugs it should be obvious to everyone. And they call 'em shakes. You don't know what you are getting.

Yeah it's a different playstyle magic wise from all the other games in the series. While I will always like "MP" it is kind of fun with a little change of pace, even though I find it way more restricting.

I wouldn't think so but I can't say for sure. I don't remember what was in the PSP version but generally these don't have the bonus stuff.

Like the PSP version of 4 had The After Years and the challgenge dungeons and the ability to change party members but the Pixel Remaster version has none of that. Just a banging soundtrack.

I'll just drop this here real quickly but I actually like FF2 because of the Origins version. I wish I played those PSP versions but alas. It wasn't meant to be.

Not in the Pixel Remaster they don't.

Thief was probably my main damage dealer which was kind of weird. They did more attacks than my Warrior. When it turned into a Ninja I could buff with it and give Haste (double the number of attacks) and some other spell that buffed my attack power. My Warrior was doing like 1/5 the health of a boss on an attack.

I missed Holy and some other level 8 spells. Dunno where the fuck they where. I did get Flare.

Yea, I am replaying the game also, imagine getting through the 3 scenarios in like 3 and a half hours if that. It blew my mind how much "harder" the game is as a kid, as an adult its an absolute cake walk.

The most of my 10 hours of gametime have come from Veldt hunting.

I take it back, I'm not going to get all of Gau's leaps. I spent a few hours last night just trying to get some main ones like Stray and a couple others. No way I'll get them all. I also didn't realize there is a whole system in place for which enemies even spawn on the Veldt and you have to have battled them before. I probably already screwed up my chances of getting 100 percent anyways by missing an enemy.

But I am using Gau. He was in my main party to defend the esper.

I found a ribbon I never knew existed during the Locke scenario of the 3 party split in S Figaro. Hidden in a wall.

Also I remembered YEARS ago saying "no" to Bannon and getting a prize. I thought I had to say no three times and he would give it to me. I forgot you have to say no the first time and then go talk to the dude in the treasure room.

Im late to the party on this, but just wanted to add that it is in Gaia, the town in the northeast that is surrounded by mountains (the town where you release the fairy and get Oxyale). The town is the one of two in the game (the other being Elfheim) to have 2 separate white magic shops and 2 separate black magic shops, as they sell level 7 magic in one shop and level 8 magic in the other.
