Been watching this for like a month now on Netflix.. 1-2 episodes a day. Starts off good, but its a slow burn with some "ok" episodes. Then, near halfway (into episode 30 out of 75), it's getting good now.

For those of you that don't know.. It's about a neurosurgeon

I was enthralled by the premise decades back but yeah, slow burn is a nice way to put it. I only watched up to that point and never did continue or know if it ever ended.

Widely underrespected.

Guillermo del toro tried to adapt it for hbo but hbo refused.

I haven't seen it in at least fifteen years. Virtually all I remember is that it's fantastic.

I also remember thinking that the anime was 90% filler that wasn't filler because the entire point of the show was exploring the themes that "filler" explored.

it used to air on syfy channel. I was watching it i think 2 episodes a week,for a while about 10 years ago. For some reason I never finished it. Maybe they stopped it. But I know I never saw an ending. Does netflix have the entire series up? I thought I heard they weren't uploading it all in one go.

As TC said, it's a very slow series. I think it would be hard to adapt into live-action.

Fuck yes, so happy more people are getting to watch it now since it's on Netflix.

I really love all of Naoki Urasawa's works, haven't found another mangaka who can write mystery on the same level. They are finally adapting one of his other series to anime, it's one of my favorites and I'm so excited for it I gotta drop the trailer here

As of less than a year ago, he said he still holds the rights and is trying. Really keeping my fingers crossed for it someday, maybe the anime getting more popular will help

No.
His identity as an outsider in Germany can be changed into outsider from other country than Japan.
I don't recall any moment where his Japanese identity is irreplaceable.

I doubt I'd watch a movie or show based on Monster, but I definitely would not if they made Tenma not Nihongonese.

Were you suggesting they make him Asian-american or something? I mean he visually stands out as one of the few Asian guys in 90's Germany and that's used to identify him at several points. Not as important, but his background lets him connect with some other Asian characters like the little orphaned girl from Myanmar.

Asian American would be cheap way out.

I mean you can change the whole nationality and ethnicity to something else. I picked American as example because it's an American adaptation.
If it's gonna be Indian adaptation, Tenma can be changed as an Indian too.

Is the full series up on netflix? I remember seeing it added but I thought only 30~ish episodes were on there and didn't want to start with it being incomplete (unless I misread how many episodes there was)

Also it would be a perfect anime to adapt into a live action show. The whole time I was watching it I thought of how perfectly it would be a live action show.

Also I don't think it's a slow burn at all. I enjoyed every single episode. Meeting all the different people people across Europe was fun.

I dont see how you can claim that a show/book that has several chapters dedicated to happenstance side characters is not a slow burn. It's not a negative term, it just describes a pace of progression.

Well obviously they must change his name too, duh?

Also, the plot is about that syndrome where you perceive other people's story as your own. Johann was never been a part of the experiment, it was his twin sister. But she forgot about it, and he imprinted her stories as his own.
it's not about Tenma.

Is it really about Johan until the last episode? I really can't see it being drawn out for this long about him.. But based on the previous post spoilers, it seem to be.

Like I said, I remember there's a lot of "filler" where the main plot doesn't necessarily progress.

Thanks for everyone for replying. Sorry I haven't replied to everyone directly. Interestingly, Del Torro tried to adapt this.. I don't now how I'd feel about a live adaption personally. Live adaption animes have always looked cheesy to me.

I'm now about halfway through the anime. God damn Lunge and his boner for Tenma is getting tiresome. Dude is just an unrealistic detective who gave up his family just to do detective work on Tenma. Ghosted his daughter and grandson. Don't understand the need for his character at this point.

I own the manga and always preferred that over the anime. But yeah, fantastic series.

I watched the first 18 or so episodes on a box set before I found out it was 80ish episodes and got upsetty. Gonna watch it with my better half once we finish Spy X Family.

Really? I love Lunge. His obsessive nature and his photographic memory make him a perfect detective. To me it makes perfect sense why he would put family no the backburner. He has a goal and nothing will satisfy him until he obtains it.

i remember watching the first 5 episodes of Monster on Cartoon Network years ago where they made a big deal about the show a little too much.

its a medical drama murder mystery anime that was interesting but then i lost interest afterwards. Show got boring real quick anyway

then there's murders going on. then the guy gets involved.

The show is more like a character driven mystery. There's the main intrigue about the antagonist, his origins, his plans. Then there's the character development as the main character meets different people and tries to come to terms with what morality is to them. The medical aspect is certainly irrelevant by the time you get past the first 5-10% of the series.

Nice! Monster is one of my all time favorites and I always recommend it in anime threads here (unless someone else already recommended it). Glad you're enjoying it TC.

I think it works well for more dramatic anime stories. Like the live action version of Erased was great. I recommend that too if you like mysteries. Both the anime and the live action version of that are on Netflix
