Poll of the Day > Incoming Nintendo leak: Direct set for the 5th of May.

This direct is mainly going to be focusing on Tears of the Kingdom, but it's going to also highlight the great results of the Mario movie by thanking the audience for going out to see it, with a promise that more adaptations of classic Nintendo franchises will be coming in the future. There's going to be a short reminder of some recent games that have come out recently such as Advance Wars, as well.

A new Yoshi game is set to be announced, along with a short Metroid Prime 4 teaser. Various smaller games are also going to be featured during the presentation. TotK will close out the presentation, but the biggest takeaway is going to be the short clip of the newest Super Mario video-game. While the clip itself will be short (similar to Odyssey's debut clip during the Switch announcement in 2016), more information will be promised later on in the year, as well as an expected 2024 release date.

This is all I gathered so far.

Nintendo skipped out on the typical E3 presentation date in years past. Ever since Covid, Nintendo doesn't really feel obligated to do a direct during that time period anymore, unless they feel it would be good timing. This direct is more so to give Zelda one last major event to put it in the news before it releases. It should be noted, nothing will be mentioned for any sort of Switch Pro/the more anticipated Switch successor. While it is believed the new Mario game is being made for that console, Nintendo is not ready to unveil anything at this time.

This teaser is going to be a little bit more than "Metroid Prime 4 is now in development"

Is there even an E3 this year? Pretty much every major company has said they aren't attending.

E3 and the Game Awards are the only things I really go out of my way for to see live.

Always a silly experience to realise after watching say the Bethesda stream, that I actually do not like any Bethesda games...

what if instead of prime 4 we get a complete overhaul of Hunters?

Technically no, but June is still also technically "E3" month, all the publishers are still going to do their conferences and videos around then. Jeff Keighley has his Summer Games Fest then, too.

E3 itself is just a name.

I know the movie made a lot of money but I don't think a Mario game would be very successful, the age of movie tie ins is over and gamers wouldn't respond well to the childish aesthetic of the film

That hasn't been the case for Nintendo in a few years now. They don't feel obligated to do so since there isn't an actual event nowadays.

I can confirm that this is not going to be a movie tie-in. Nintendo is not interested in this movie tie-ins at this time.

My personal opinion, though, I think Nintendo should take the look of the Mushroom Kingdom, at least Toad Town and Peach's castle, in the direction of the Mario movie. The environment in the movie looked a lot more like I imagine people would have thought based on SMB1-World, than what 64 decided to settle with (probably hardware limitations). It's a darn shame hardware limitations of the N64 has made it where N64 kiddos nostalgia will always dictate what the kingdom looks like.

And not to rain on any parades here, but Nintendo sees the movies as more of a brand awareness tool, and considers their core business to be gaming fully, still. Mario Kart 8 alone is going to outgross what Avengers Endgame ended up making at the box office by the time everything is said and done, so gaming is still the more lucrative business.

The hope is that these movies are going to keep these games in the consumer market's mind, as well as helping Nintendo with their push into the amusement park sector.

Edit: Nintendo sees gaming as their bread and butter, but as Miyamoto stated a few years ago, they want Mario to be an entertainment icon, bigger than Mickey, not just a video-game icon.

I see Mario as more of a piece of hot Italian ass
