Did you notice how famous actors used to be loved and almost worshipped like gods during the early 2000s and before that? Now just about everyone hates them and views them as pathetic clowns, and they get relentlessly mocked every time they make a statement about news or controversial things. So what happened? They are seen on the same level as children now.

The late Patrice O'Neil once said that Twitter ruined the idea that celebrities are better than you. I guess it's hard to have the same respect you had for an actor you've loved your whole life because you can now see them spell the word "you" as "u" in a tweet.

Strongly disagree. I think it's worse than ever, with reality television shows, fan "armies," Youtube and Twitch elevating people to different tiers of celebrity, etc.

I also mentioned in the one music thread that this generation likes to cherrypick their musical tastes rather than hype fixating on specific genres. People are more a fan of specific artists than actual genres, which I see as a form of celebrity worship.

I thought Patrice O'Neil died before Twitter got big? >_> Man for some reason I'm always thinking of his death being a 2000s thing.

There is nothing weird at all about people admiring celebrities. In fact it makes a lots of sense why they would do that.

I think the rise of reality tv and shows like The Simple Life, Newlyweds, and The Osbournes were the real beginning of the pulling back of veil of intrigue from celebrities, but the rise of social media profiles as avenues for fan outreach and brand marketing certainly hastened the process.

"Never meet your heroes."

A lot of celebrities were idolized due to lack of knowledge. Folks want to believe in perfect talented people who they can look up to, and maybe become one day. The alternative is knowing that a lot of rich people are flawed and corrupt. Ignorance is bliss.

Early Hollywood tried to keep that image going by covering up any hint of scandal. But then paparazzi happened and its own industry that made cash off revealing the dark secrets. Social media was another nail.

iirc there was some story about Babe Ruth womanizing and the press at the time just turned to each other and agreed to ignore it. Different culture. If FDR were around today, people would upload daily videos of him struggling to stand up and calling him "Sleepy Frank." There's no gentlemens club secrets anymore when everybody's got a phone.
