I can't name one single popular new band or musician. Do people still go to concerts and stuff? Why did musicians lose so much cultural relevance in the past decade or so?

I can't name one single popular new band or musician:
I think that's just a symptom of being out of touch.

Do people still go to concerts and stuff?
Yes.

With so many bands to check out(old and new), i've never once cared about "rock is dead" "musicians are dead" "X is dead" because none of it is actually dead. People just get old and just want things fed to them even moreso than when they were younger. Older people lose the drive to pay attention, and haven't bothered looking around for the past decade or more, and wonder where it all went.

I agree with all of that. The last part I would just add that's it's not that, it's just that all that kid shit becomes irrelevant as you grow old. Maybe both.

There's still a lot of great rock music out there. Why it isn't as big as it once was, I don't know. Maybe lack of promotion now or something, and a lot of people in the rock music world can't move on past the 70s, 80s, and 90s.

Becuase music is more omnipresent and available than the past, it may seem like people care about it less. Certainly not the case though.

I buy a shit ton of vinyl and cds, and our local record store has had a loyal customer base for 50 years. We also attend 40-80k festivals every year (front rail for life) and just bought passes for this year yesterday. Coachella weekend 1 starts tomorrow and they do a free livestream on YouTube with three streams; definitely suggest watching if you wanna see that yes, people still enjoy music, and to maybe find something you might like. Stoked to see Blondie and Gorillaz' sets while chilling on my couch.

Cultural zeitgeist changes over time. Rock had a solid 50 years as a dominant Western genre, but societal and interest changes happen, technology evolves which alters music, etc. Polyphonic has a great video essay on the brief rise and fall of disco, for example. Hip hop and rap became the dominant genres in at the turn of the millennium, which was also when a lot of the world was now able to access whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted. Promotion or lack thereof is a given as part of the equation because capitalism and money, but we were just able to watch the transition happen in real time.

Like you said, rock is still around and there are lots of great rock acts, it's just not the dominant anymore. And that's cool too.

While I assume that still happens because humans have always wanted physical, acoustic instruments, I figure more young people would be gravitating to synths or iPad/Macbook for music creation/learning. Absolutely no idea though.

But if by "music" you mean corporations who slap a pretty face on top of shitty upbeat computer sounds stapled together in a formulaic manipulation of contrived pseudo-excitement, then yes, there's never been more of it.

I've had four vaccine shots and will continue to get them as they are released. I actually did get COVID last year from a festival (most likely the Rage Against the Machine day since I literally had other people's sweat on me from being at the front rail), and it kinda sucked, but the vaccines did the job and I just slept dozed on my couch for a week.

After a readily accessible vaccine has been available for long enough, I don't feel my life is in danger, and generally I'm statistically safe to do one of the things I enjoy most in life.

What music is available, and what music is popular are two VERY different things.

People's unwillingness to search out quality music and just listen to the stuff from "the good ole days" is why there's 10 radio stations with 8 of them playing the same 50 songs they've played since 1995.

You don't think it's "As good as it used to be" because you have no sentimental attachment to the music that is being released today.

It's been written about hundreds of times. The music of our youth makes us think of our youth. You attach the music to a simpler time. You have no fondness to today's music, even if it's in a similar genre to what you used to listen to, because as you get older you don't relate it to life events like you did when you were younger.

So you don't even bother to seek out anything new, because you rather the comfort of your "youth music" and how it makes you feel.
