Summary-
John Oliver talks about how HOAs provide local service within your development (e.g., parks, swimming pools, landscaping), but can also have a ton of power. With that power, some HOAs fine you for violations (e.g., house looks non-uniform, garbage visible), and if you dont pay the fines, can evict you and foreclose on you based on the unpaid fines+lawyer fees. Government also stays out of this cant really help you since HOAs a private entity that you agreed to join. In the end, he states that over 80% of new developments are in an HOA, so its hard for you to get a new house.

Hot Take-
Homeowners literally bought into an HOA. Its your own fault for not following the rules, letting fines build up, not voicing your oppositions at HOA meetings, etc. Buying a home isnt an accident; it takes a significant amount of effort. This is your own fault if you get suckered into a shitty HOA.

Background: I personally own two houses and both are not in HOAs. Based on my experience of buying four houses in my lifetime, it wasnt that difficult to find homes without HOAs.

Why don't you make a youtube series taking down Oliver's talking points since you're so opinionated? At least there you'll reach an auidence and make more money to buy more houses you rich millennial, oh, right, "rich" is a bad word now how about successful milleninal, that better? You get to feel superior to two age groups instead of one.

Its a double edged sword. On the one hand, they are good because it keeps your neighborhood looking good and prevents morons from parking their cars on the front yard and doing crazy stuff like that, which keeps curb appeal and raises property value. On the other hand, you cant really do what you want to your own house without permission. I don't have one and luckily all my neighbors are clean and don't blast music at odd hours of the day. All the yards look good except for a few outliers.

HOAs consolidate power and make homeownership even less viable for many people. It's not just a matter of your personal HOA being annoying.

I don't have an HOA for my house, but a lot of the places in my area when I was looking were in HOA planned neighborhoods.

I understand that people have an innate feeling of "muh property, muh freedom. I won't bow down to any HOA" but seeing many neighborhoods without HOAs it's actually worth *something* to not have all the common-ish areas of your neighborhood looking like trash, with eight broken down cars on the edge of your property, etc. etc.

(Obviously some HOAs go way too far though)
