Clearly if pro critics pan something but others are still flocking to see it. Sounds to me like there system is broken or they could go the route like panning psycho but when everyone loved it the critics changed their minds and liked it too

It's probably one of those "dumb fun" type of movies that you're not supposed to take seriously, and those typically don't hit well with critics.

Same thing with Aquaman, even though that fared better critically.

critics have their own personal biases and it reflects on what they review
siskel and ebert 2 of the most well known critics of all time could not be trusted to give an unbiased review to a slasher movie
they both hated the genre with a passion so other than halloween and scream they would trash every slasher they came across yet fans flocked to those movies in droves

one of them even gave people betsy palmers actual address so they could harass her for being in friday the 13th

basically always go with the audience score over the critic score when deciding if you want to see a movie or not

Because most critics try to to be analytical and dig below the surface with their critiques. Most people going to see a movie, regardless of how people online like to cosplay being sweater wearing pipe smoking cinema experts, just want to be entertained.

When you put that knowledge next to the scores its easy to tell that the mario movie does not have a lot of depth, but it is very entertaining

idk not a waste of your precious time watching it lol.

Anyway it's a kids movie, and those are generally simple and devoid of any profound themes about life but it's all whatever, no big deal, no need to overzealously gatekeep quality either.

just saw it despite critic reviews, trusting that user score... and man... i did not enjoy it. i enjoyed parts of it, but as a whole, i did not think it was a very good movie at all. it's basically on the level of something like emoji movie to me, and it's definitely getting a free ride on that brand recognition.

this makes me really nervous about the rumored upcoming zelda movie.

Various animated films like The Lion King, Akira, Spirited Away, Coraline, Isle of Dogs, Dragonball Super Broly, and Perfect Blue to name several were praised by professional critics along with general audiences because those movies either had depth, were well written, were very entertaining, or were all of the above.

It's strictly "obligatory kids movies" that they disproportionally dislike because otherwise do we want to go on a discourse over why critics hated Cars lol

I doubt any critic was reviewing Mario through the same lens as an avant garde film tbh. Its possible that the movie just doesn't hold up against other recently made animated films. At least that's my opinion.

It's not even good fan service, other than the easter eggs, because they kinda ruin Mario's entire character by making him a loser for half the movie.

If you didn't care about Mario or Nintendo video games what is in the movie for you to like? It's more like a theme park ride than a proper movie. No subplot or character motivation/relationship is developed properly.

Of course most critics would dislike it. That should be obvious if you take a step back and think about what the movie is like if you didn't grow up with Mario.

And no it isn't because they're biased against animated movies. Most Illumination movies reviewed better because they were more focused. The Mario movie crammed a lot of characters and settings in at the expense of character development.
