Just saw this on Steam and the combat looks cool. The only space sim I ever played was Freelancer back in the day though. Is this similar where theres different factions, you can do trading, etc?

I've only gotten a few hours in on it. I'm having fun with it, I'm really wanting out of this sentinel though, I haven't found anything that sells new ships yet, can't wait to jump in the gunships.

I like that you are rewarded for exploration. Found myself flying around the entirety of every zone I visited to complete the little puzzles and find the hidden chests.

Flak cannons Fuck. Shit. Up. fyi. Like goddamn.

I've seen some side quests, nothing like a bounty board or the like yet. Just finding breadcrumbs randomly in a zone of space that gives you a side quest like "Go salvage this abandoned ship" or the like. I don't know if piracy is a thing you can partake in, I haven't tried firing on ally ships yet. I'm leaning towards no though, don't think there is smuggling either. At least I haven't found any contraband items, all just regular cargo like seeds, clothing, food, ect. that you can sell at various markets which have a pretty simplified High Demand/Average/Low Demand system.

Yeah it's a great game. I've never played freelancer, but I've seen several people compare it to that game.

Well it's not a roguelike like the first game was. So it plays more like an RPG where you're rewarded for exploring, solving environmental puzzles, gaining loot from enemies, etc.

Yes there is smuggling. There are also randomized jobs that you can do that will be things like, defeat these enemies, deliver these supplies, etc. I don't know if there's bounty hunting, but so far I haven't encountered that.

I played this for a bit. Seems decent. Don't know what to make of the story so far. Everything moves so fast and there's no time to absorb anything thats really happening.

It doesn't really have much of what was in freelancer in terms of factions, misc activities i.e. piracy, trading, bounty hunting etc. But what it got in return was a better combat system IMO. The extra mobility you get from being able to move and thruster up down left right in addition to forward and back makes the combat feel far more fast paced. But what I want is to participate in larger fleet battles with large battleships and all that now.

Might buy it, dunno. The space puzzles seem like a cool idea but I prefer to get to the combat.

If you want trading, factions and all of that, you might want to check out an indie from 2015 called Rebel Galaxy. It never reaches the point of you having your own fleet, but there are different factions you can build affinity with.

And the trading does have contraband where the military will try to confiscate it if you get close to them while transporting it. You can either hand it over or try to fight them.

Everspace 2 has better combat than that game, but Rebel Galaxy's not bad overall.

Rebel Galaxy was fun, but similar to Everspace the first and second games are a bit different. The first uses a naval warfare combat model, with you piloting larger ships and having wingmen that pilot the smaller stuff. The second game uses a dogfighting model where you're in smaller ships.

For smuggling I do remember that befriending one of the pirate factions gave you access to a smuggler's hold that could avoid scans from the 'space police'. Standard merchant holds were larger but left you vulnerable to scans.

All in all Rebel Galaxy was a good 'introduction' to the genre for people unsure if they'll like these kinds of games.
