People aren't boycotting Universal Studios over here comments and thats likely one of the revenue streams contributing the most.

But even if she was making no money, she's worth almost a billion. You really can't go broke at that level of wealth.

Plus there's actual laws being passed against trans people and we're focusing on a single person not directly involved with that. Feels like too much energy is getting put into outrage over her statements vs actual threats.

Women's causes but with extremely carved out requirements to ensure that none of the money can benefit trans women in any way. Mostly by excluding them from being able to access centers and whatnot. So it is still very harmful.

Okay, but the thing is, this isn't just "some random idiot on Twitter". Rowling is maybe the most successful author of our time. She has vast social reach, connected to millions of people around the world who have her to thank for an enormous piece of their childhoods. That creates loyalty. So when she publicly says something like "transitioning is comparable to human experimentation", a lot of people are going to say "Oh, it is? Huh...well, y'know, if she said it, it must be true!"

Something a lot of people seem to forget is that social power exists. So she doesn't hold any political office. Do you seriously believe that means she doesn't have the ability to influence change? She can affect the thinking of an enormous quantity of people with a single tweet, and you want to act like there's nothing she can do as long as those of us who already reject her just plug our ears and pretend she doesn't exist? And this isn't even getting into how she uses her wealth explicitly to further anti-trans causes.

But there's another issue here that I don't see brought up as often, and that's the insidious tactic of trying to convince people not to call out transphobes. Because "Stop talking about this specific transphobe!" is one small step away from "Stop talking about all transphobes!", which is in turn one step from "I haven't heard about any transphobes recently, which means transphobia must not exist!" And the next step after that? Well, true, it's hard for transphobia to matter much in a world where all the trans people are dead.

We need to draw attention to this kind of thinking whenever and wherever we can, because if we just ignore it, nothing will be done about it, and then, sooner rather than later, a lot of innocent people will be killed.

The ability to change things through "the proper channels" increasingly feels closed off to many. You can't change the makeup of the Senate, because you don't live in a red state, you can't change the makeup of the Supreme Court, because they aren't elected, you can't even be sure that a majority vote will change the presidency. And if it did there's no guarantee that if you did, you'll get someone who won't immediately be turned by corporate interests.

This dysfunction and lack of trust in our democracy results in people trying to wield power through the means available to them: consumer choices, stray acts of violence, fixations on things that are "not the real problem" but seem, at least, possible to alter.

People focus on Rowling and Chappelle "instead of" legislators (I think often this is a false dichotomy; plenty of people do both), because they feel, not without reason, that it is impossible to change the latter group of people's grip on power.

Which isn't to downplay the real impacts that influential media figures can have on their own; others ITT have made good points about why this stuff is worth opposing.
