The Hobbit wasn't even supposed to be 3 movies. It was supposed to be split into 2 and the 3rd would have been adapting material that bridged it and the LOTR trilogy, but the Tolkien estate for some reason backed out of the deal, forcing the studio to turn a 2-movie script into a 3-movie script and it shows.

This looks interesting:

Another complaint is that Sanders relies heavily on feedback from focus groups, which tend to favor broad and less inclusive programming. Several Amazon insiders say the reliance on testing and data led to a clash late last summer, when an Amazon executive said in a marketing meeting for the series A League of Their Own that data showed audiences found queer stories off-putting and suggested downplaying those themes in materials promoting the show. Series co-creator Will Graham became greatly concerned about bias built into Amazons system for evaluating shows, which multiple sources say often ranked broad series featuring straight, white male leads above all others. One executive calls A League of Their Own a proxy for how diverse and inclusive shows are treated.
Graham launched into an interrogation of the system, questioning multiple executives about it. Amazon took the issue seriously and dropped the system of ranking shows based on audience scores. Insiders cite this show as one that Sanders did passionately support, but for months after it dropped, there was no word on whether it would be renewed. Ultimately, Amazon agreed to a four-episode second and final season. Still, several Amazon veterans believe the system remains too dependent on those same test scores. All this perpetuation of white guys with guns its a self-fulfilling prophecy, says one. And another: Relying on data is soul crushing Theres never, I know the testing wasnt that great, but I believe in this.' Graham declined to comment.

What the viewers want: Dudes & guns!
What Amazon made instead: Lesbian baseball
What the viewers viewed: something else
Amazon's response: "No, it is the viewers who are wrong"

When a company begins telling its customers what to want, instead of making what the customers actually want, it's all downhill from there.

There's an abundance of problems with focus groups and with audiences generally not knowing what they want.

https://youtu.be/zA8Ik6Tfd9I

That said, Rings of Power was just a mess. It felt like a very soulless and thoughtless show that had a lot of attention put into reminding you of the LotR films. The visual design of the show was really impressive, but otherwise it was shockingly sloppy. It's amazing so much money was put into it without thought.

Tbh I don't think MCU is an example. Ask people 20 years ago if they wanted a series of movies that had a connecting plot in the background to set up a team up movie they'd probably say no. They took a risk that paid off because the people in charge believed in their vision. Not the vision of a focus test group.

The show had poor pacing, and poorly distributed screen time. The show had a number of different characters doing different things, and it was disappointing that the coverage felt uneven. Also, I found Galadriel very unlikable in contrast to Elrond. Yes, elves are pretentious dicks, but you have to on some level enjoy watching the main characters do things.

I think the show was also hurt by the conflict between Tolkien's black and white morality and the compelling nature of the darker characters. It's not, in my opinion, made at all obvious why the elves and humans are good and Halbrand is bad. The message that there are these dark creatures out there who are just evil and can't be given a home and don't deserve to live kind of doesn't resonate with modern viewers very well in an era where we are increasingly becoming used to more nuanced entertainment.

Gandalf (or whichever wizard he is) is obviously primordially good, but there is a definite air of danger and uncertainty to his power and quest. He hurts people without meaning to, and even if his ultimate goal is good and he is a good man, the things he does are dangerous and won't always be completely good. The elves are assholes who treat humans like dirt, Numenor's society looks too much like our own to seem like paradise, the not-Hobbits have a fun society that is marred by leaving the slow and sick to die. The dwarves are isolationist pricks. The "evil" orcs and the mutated elf aren't entirely sympathetic because they do bad things, but it is kind of hard to fault them for wanting to live and have a home. Would Gandalf have given the same answer if he had been in Galadriel's place? I'd certainly hope not!

Rings of Power and The Wheel of Time both feel like they are trying to twist the source material to tell a kind of story they really aren't suited for.

I think there was a draft or idea at some point where a peaceful coexistence between orcs and the good guys gets screwed up by Galadriel, but then this plot thread got written out. It felt like that's what was being built towards.

There is a recurring theme that the act of hunting evil creates evil. Sauron's behaviour wasn't consistent with that of an evil manipulator. We repeatedly see Galadriel make the wrong choices and fail to learn obvious lessons, and generally be overly aggressive. It's emphasized how certain characters or factions who served Morgoth want to turn away from that.
