Screw Rings of Power. The one that REALLY gutted me was Wheel of Time. Talk about a soulless, pointlessly dark, his of a series that clearly doesn't understand the fundamental points of the source material.

For what its worth, I really despise what Game of Thrones did to modern fantasy storytelling. Ever since it took off, every adaptation of every world feels compelled to go 10 steps too far in the "crapsack world" direction

Wait is this why invincible is taking so long, they wasted all the time, money and resources on some stupid lotr show? Don't they know we only care about the boys and invincible on their service?

They apparently don't

But according to Salke, the series has worked. This desire to paint the show as anything less than a success its not reflective of any conversation Im having internally, she says.

Rings of Power was a fine show and I enjoyed it. Looking forward to season 2 myself.

I imagine the retention rate on all such shows are generally low, though.

This. People were trying to use the same argument against Hogwarts Legacy retention rate. Most people don't stick with a show for the long run.

I dont really recall the show being any darker than the books tbh, since I've started reading them again.

Definitely a little worried about the many changes, but will have to see what season 2 does with them ultimately.

Oh it definitely was. They set that tone as early as the first episode when they invented a wife for Perrin, just so he could immediately accidentally kill her to make his story arc more edgy.

And it just keeps going. A lot more wanton, brutal slaughter of innocents, gratuitous torture scenes, even their big, capstone victory at the end of the season is punctuated with Lans entire village being totally wiped out and Moiraine being stilled.. Nearly every story beat is every story beat is made much more mean spirited than it was in the books, in ways major and minor. For a story blatantly inspired by Lord of the Rings, there sure is a lot of GoT in the show.
