Occasionally a mouse gets in my apartment. I don't like to kill them, but none of the humane traps I've tried have worked at all. They eat my food and shit all over the place, so I can't just ignore them.

I remember when my grandmother had a glue trap and we caught one and the screaming. It killed me. I cried a bit inside. Poor thing.

Unless you are using a cage or pit type trap that you check regularly -- killing them is the most humane thing you can do

They're safer inside your house than they are out in the wild where predators will end up killing them anyway.

Seal up all food. You are getting them over and over because they leave scent trails for others to follow. Deep clean.

Find the hole they are getting in through. It can be as small at the width of a pencil. And then stuff all holes with copper mesh.

Most of the time if you catch a mouse alive and let it outside it just goes right back into your house

This kind. I've seen it under many different brand names, but the basic design is the same - an entrance tunnel on both sides, with ramps that tip so the mice can enter but not leave.

When I've used this for severe mouse infestations it's caught the majority of them (needed a few other types of traps to catch the last few); for lesser infestations it's usually caught every last one.

The bucket ones that have water at the bottom. The mice die relatively instantly from drowning.

Snap traps

Eliminate food sources, deep clean and check for the tiniest of holes and seal them.

They leave urine trails - usually along the walls - for others to follow, btw.

They work but are you sure yours is a mouse and not a rat? Mouse traps will not work on rats and vice versa.

You also gotta smear peanut butter more on the trap and not just the one spot in the back.

These were what I used for the mice problem at my parents house, but like I said, smear some peanut butter on the entrance and walk way, just a very thin layer, and then put some in the back tray.

When you release them you have to go miles away otherwise they'll just come back.

For clean up, you're gonna want to mask up and douse the poop in a bleach solution before wiping and scooping it up, do not vacuum or sweep it. Don't want to get hantavirus.

Also use an enzyme cleaner to remove any remaining odor.

I've used that kind a few times with pretty good success, usually I'd just put a chunk of feta cheese in the little container at its back and once the mouse is in there, just drown it in a sink filled with water and keep the trap to use again later.

Not exactly humane lol. But yeah its effective. In my new house my one cat had a six day stretch where he got a new basement mouse each day. Usually hed drown them in his water dish like a jackass.

These were also great because my exterminator put up a ton of them around the house in possible areas of entry. Not only do they do the job quick and painless, it also tips you off as to the problem areas and where the mice could be getting in.

He set a few up in the garage and, no joke, as we were standing there and I was paying him one went off and got a nice right there and then as we were talking.

Yeah, I'm not doing the drowning thing or beating anything to death, no offense to those that do, because those m'fers gotta go, I agree.

The beauty of the snap trap is "pop" and it's done. Or you missed, and you just "re-peanut butter" and reset.
