i recently started to watch it after some of my friends kept telling me for months how great it was and blah blah blah since they never stfu about it. at 20 episodes atm. this shit is gonna take a while but no worries, i'll watch at my own pace. no need to speed watch it or whatever... lol

Alright, time for the long awaited Thriller Bark post. I wrote most of this like, 3 weeks ago when I actually finished Thriller Bark, but I wanted to check over it and add a little more and just didn't have time till now.

So rankings and stuff may be different between then and what I've watched now, but still. This is how I felt about things like, 50 episodes ago lmao.

"Aw man. Just officially finished Thriller Bark, and Brook is now an official crewmember. Didn't know how I felt about Brook when he was first introduced, but as always, One Piece makes me love them by the end of their intro arc. That tie-in back to Laboon was such a wild throwback, but I loved it.
Thriller Bark was a fucking wild ride, but I gotta say, overall, I really liked it.
The setting was cool, the monsters were interesting, there was some really cool lore and weird ass powers introduced in this arc. The various throwback to classic Universal Monster films was especially appreciated. Some solid battles, some solid comedy. It overall rocked.

But... man, is it just me or did this arc get real creepy towards the women characters? Like, the show's always had "fan-service" and some some perverted jokes and shit (thanks Sanji :/) but damn, I feel like every dude character intro'd in this arc was super gross at times. Absalom and his harrasment of Nami was especially gross, and then fucking Sanji being like "Fuck you for being bale to be invisible and creep on people, I WANTED TO DO THAT!"

I still loved the arc as a whole, but if it wasn't for that stuff, this might've been my favorite arc yet. Even still I think it's still pretty high up there.

Stand out fights:
Zoro vs Brook's shadow:
Man, we've had some great swordfight battles in this show already, but this was a fucking great one. Franky and Brook color commentating was a fun addition too. Love any chance Zoro has to be a stone cold badass, and this arc he had several of those moments.

Ussop vs Paloma:
This was actually a really fucking solid fight from Ussop. That doesn't happen that often, and yeah, sure, he still used trickery to win, but after the Luffy vs. Ussop fight they pretty firmly established that tricks just ARE his way of fighting, so I'm cool with it. Plus it led to some pretty fucking funny moments. Good show Ussop.

Luffy vs... Luffy? (Oors)/Moria
I loved these fights. Oors in general was a fucking cool concept, and I loved how much they played with his Luffy-like personality as a zombie. Loved his creature design, and he was a genuinely menacing threat. Luffy's 100 shadow form was pretty wild, hope we get so see Blue Luffy again someday. And then Moria got a fucking final form boss fight in at the end. Great shit. Moria was a pretty interesting Big Bad this time, different threat than Luffy usually has to tackle, I liked it.

I'm a decent chunk into the show now, so I'll give a current arc ranking:
Albasta > East Blue > Thriller Bark > Skypeia > Water 7 > Ennis Lobby
Choosing to split Water 7 and Ennis Lobby up because personally I felt like the first half of the arc was stronger than the second half by a good chunk.

Kuma is fucking terrifying btw. Zoro and Sanji fighting over who got to sacrifice themselves for everyone was weirdly sweet."

Now more recently, Sabody Arcipelago was a really cool and important mini-arc. That shit got dark; wasn't expecting this show to tackle human trafficking, but they sure went there. And shit, I guess they are still pirates, but still. Love that Luffy continues to not give a fuck about the rules and laws of this world in the purest way possible, just wrecking the shit out of that Celestial Dragon.

Though it did kinda backfire since they got fucking party wiped by Kuma and pals. Kuma continues to be terrifying. Also he's a fucking robot, with robot clones? Or what? Idk, but his weirdness adds to his intimidation.

The woman island arc was... odd, but I'm glad it was Luffy on that island and not Sanji. Kept it relatively innocent and non-creepy. Also Boa Hancock, this scary badass lady who didn't give a fuck about anyone falling in love with Luffy is pretty fucking gold tbh.

Excited for this showdown that's about to happen at Impel Down, shit's about to get fucking REAL, I can tell.

Also as of last episode it seems like Sanji is also transphobic, and I just continue to hate Sanji more and more.

He's useful and still has enough fun moments to make his presence in the crew kinda tolerable still, but ugh, he's just so fucking grating and gross and bleh.

Been a minute, so I think it's time for a current crew member ranking:

Sanji
Brook
Ussop
Nami
Chopper
Franky
Robin
Luffy
Zoro

I like Brook well enough, but outside of a cool intro plot and that dope Laboon tie in, he hasn't really done all that much yet. He's fun, and I'm glad he's a part of the crew, but he doesn't seem to be all THAT great of a fighter, we already have a (much better) swordsman in the crew, and while I'm glad Luffy finally got his musician, it hasn't exactly been super helpful to them in anything yet.

Ussop has enough fun moments to mostly make up for his annoying ones, so I grandfathered him ahead of Brook, but that could shift later

Franky made a big jump. He's such a batshit character in a group of batshit characters and I love how out there he is. Also the only "pervert" character I like in the whole show. Think it's cause he's not actively creeping on specific people, he's just an exhibitionist running around in his underwear. Still weird and perverted, but not as malicious and yucky feeling as it is when Sanji creeps on ladies. Also the fact that he just owns that he's considered a pervert is a nice bit of self-awareness. He doesn't try to twist it like Sanji does trying to call himself "chivalrous" and shit, Franky just fucking owns what he is.

Also, I kinda feel like part of why he's an exhibisionist is cause, in the flashbacks to when he was a kid, we got to see how proud of his work and creations he was/is now. After the accident, he literally built himself a new body, and he himself became essentially his favorite creation. Course he wants to show off his handiwork.

Franky's just weirdly very entertaining to me, even though at first I was afraid I'd find him super annoying, but he circumvented my expectations by a lot, easy top 4 now.

I bumped Luffy back in front of Robin, I think mostly just cause we've gotten way more Luffy hijinks and less focus on Robin the past couple small arcs, but my top 3 is still pretty close together. Chopper's in the same boat, still love him, but he just hasn't had a lot of focus lately, so Franky's got his spot. Sorry buddy, still love ya.

chopper is just the cutest goodest boy. love him especially when they play the trope that he is their pet lmao.

good writeup. feel pretty similar about many of your points, but i just didnt' really resonate wiht thriller bark. i think it got better in the second half, though. but i mostly jus wanted to get off that island. i could tell that moria was a little sissy nanny.

now impel down is where the big boys eat. you should enjoy the next couple arcs.

Chopper is just so good and pure, I love him so much. I will say, the fact that I love him as much as I do while only ranking him at number 5 in the crew just speaks to how well written this shows characters are. I love 8/9 characters of an ensemble cast, and even the one I dont like had some standout moments still. Its wild how well developed this shows characters are, I wouldnt have expected it when I first started this show.

at least nami got to be the one to take down absolom in the end to make up for how creepy he was.
and i like that nami was running away until her new friend got hurt and thats when she turned to fight
i kind of like that about her. she is a coward until someone she cares about is hurt then she will step up.

robin refusing to dock was hilarious
all the strawhats fighting the giant together was fun

and yeah from here on out the animators get really porny with the women
oda still puts the girls in skimpy outfits but the anime adds extreme close ups, jiggle physics and moments that were clearly made to touch yourself too that arent there in the manga

I mean, I'll be real, if the rest of the show's writing wasn't so fucking good, I def would have dropped this show a while ago with how it treats women. >_>

It wasn't toooooooo bad at first, but it's been getting progressively and noticeably more skeezy and gross in that regard.

But also fuck, the rest of the show is so good and fun. :/

But honestly, that's part of why I don't watch a lot of Shonen anime in general anymore. >_>

the way the female characters have become overly sexualized over the years has been a common criticism of the series for awhile now

Im gonna be real, I dont think the live action One Piece is gonna be very good.

I hope Im wrong, but theres just so much Batshit crazy stuff that feels like wont be very doable in live action. Like, Blue Luffy in Thriller Bark for a sngle example. Theres no way that doesnt look silly as fuck in live action, but its fine in animation.

Hell, Luffy himself is gonna look weird in live action when he uses his powers at all.

tbh part of me has hope for LA OP just because Oda seems to be overseeing it, and the cast seems enthusiastic about it. Plus apparently it has a ridiculous budget. Though still, even with how East Blue is relatively grounded, IDK how they'll do Luffy or Buggy's powers
