Rail companies have been cutting costs on everything and pushing for fewer operators per train. This is the result.

Is this one of those things where this happens a lot but you never actually hear about it until a major disaster happens (East Palestine) and then every incident afterwards makes the news and suddenly it looks like a crisis?

Seems more like evidence that, "Hey; something is wrong with the railways in our country, maybe you might want to look into that, mm?"

Not really endemic to a single company as it is a need to have some sort of oversight come in and force change to happen.

Ethanol is the stuff you drink. It's only volatile in the sense that it's flammable.

America has fuck tons of railroad, just most of it isn't passenger. Out of site out of mind. Things have gotten better too, not long in the past it was around 2000 derailments per year.

There's about 150k miles of in-service train tracks in the US.

But most of it is commercial, so it's kind of an "out of site, out of mind" situation where no one thiks about it until you read a story about a derailment.

Plus, not all derailments end in accidents like this.

Some train logistics person I saw an interview with said that the problem scales perfectly when you track the length of whats being pulled by these trains. The companies that have no [or bad] policies on this are the worst offenders in crashes.

As trains get longer, there's more opportunity for something to break, and it makes a bigger mess when that happens.

The gist of what he said was that it boils down to sheer tonnage. The longer the train the more weight it has onboard.

Thus the harder it will be for the train to stop even with automatic braking systems. Its the equivalent of an 18 wheeler that needs more of a space cushion because of a heavy load.

They got into some bad habits during covid when Fat Donnie didnt give a shit. If they put in some controls to either rein that in or enforce different speed regulations for them it should go back to prepandemic levels.

With the new brakes, every car effectively stops at once.
The old brakes start at the front and work towards the back.

You do know that trail derailments are actually going DOWN each decade?

In the 1980's it was common for those numbers to be in the 6000-7000 range.

Since the late 1970s, derailments have shrunk by more than three quarters, federal data shows. In 1978 alone, there were a whopping 8,763 derailments across the U.S., which killed 41 people

To be fair a derailment is considered anything that causes a train wheel to slip off the track which can be as simple as a single wheel coming off. The vast majority of derailments aren't even worth mentioning which is why no one hears about it
