Some train logistics person I saw an interview with said that the problem scales perfectly when you track the length of whats being pulled by these trains.

America has fuck tons of railroad, just most of it isn't passenger. Out of site out of mind. Things have gotten better too, not long in the past it was around 2000 derailments per year.

As trains get longer, there's more opportunity for something to break, and it makes a bigger mess when that happens.

Thus the harder it will be for the train to stop even with automatic braking systems. Its the equivalent of an 18 wheeler that needs more of a space cushion because of a heavy load.

In the 1980's it was common for those numbers to be in the 6000-7000 range.

Only 41 deaths in 8763 derailments is pretty good ratio, though

To be fair a derailment is considered anything that causes a train wheel to slip off the track which can be as simple as a single wheel coming off. The vast majority of derailments aren't even worth mentioning which is why no one hears about it
