the video game Planescape: Torment was written by a man named Chris Avellone, who was accused of sexual assault in the year 2020

today, Chris won a lawsuit saying that the accusation against him was false, that he didn't sexually assault anybody

the female accuser has agreed to retract her statements to the media accusing Chris, and to pay a seven-figure settlement

Chris's version of the story is that he broke up with a young woman that he was dating, and her female friends were angry that he broke up with her, so they took revenge upon him with a false allegation of sexual assault

Saw that on Twitter, glad it's all resolved. Legally, anyway. His reputation is sadly another matter, people will still think of him as "that one rapist" or whatever without knowing wtf they're talking about. Hopefully he gets work in the industry still, I want to see him.

Not that it's all unwarranted and we don't know everything that went down while he was there, but some of the things he says when talking about current things they're up feels like it's still a chip on his shoulder still. Not that I'd call Avellone a dick just for that, and he's human, so it's still pretty whatever to me.

It's more that he's made characters like Kriea or Ulysses author inserts so he can rant about his opinion on the setting. And I've heard he gets pissy about the idea of Darth Nihlus being anything other than an amorphus blob of force wound.

I would consider it a loss for the gaming industry if this were to permanently ruin his career. He's one of the best video game writers/designers imo, especially since aside from original storytelling and world-building he deliberately avoids clichs like romance and stereotypically good-vs-evil plots

They didn't just settle. They sent out a statement fully repudiating their earlier statements and explicitly stated that he had not assaulted anyone. That's not what people with strong cases do.

That's why I'm so convinced of Avellone's innocence. Paying a large sum for a libel case is odd enough, going the extra step of outright demolishing one's own position? That's not a normal agreement.

Anytime anyone brings up something like this people just start saying it will make victims afraid to report their crimes so we have no choice but to let these people get away with it.
