My only experience with Chicago was travelling through on a Grey Hound bus and when I stepped out the depot to smoke , some dude came up and was trying to sell me an answering machine.

It has a bad reputation for a number of clear reasons. Lori Lightfoot exasperated plenty of them. Good riddance to her regime.

I visited once and it was pretty awesome. I don't think I could live there though because of how much of the year is cold.

That's because many of the people who discuss it only do so in clearly racialized terms. No one will say anything if you say the traffic is bad, the buildings are ugly, the food is trash, there's no good music etc. You can even say the taxes are too high and they shouldn't ban guns. No issue there. When you talk about it in the way you clearly want to talk about it, that's when it's racist.
