Don't you just buy a guide early and then upload the contents? I know that's what one dude said he did to keep on top of the bounties

Considering the 'pedia' sites were started directly as a contor to fandom for allowing malware in their ads and refusing to remove it yes

If anything, it's a miracle the dumbass fandom sidebar isn't plastered all over gamefaqs.

Damnit I was gonna try that when they first started and figured it would be obvious and I would get in trouble or something.

Also, wouldn't be surprised if Fandom stops bounties forever.

Is that why there havent been as many FAQs, Walkthroughs, and Guides? There isnt any money for those that do it so they go to sites where they might get paid?

they aren't
it's like a 50$ gift card to amazon or something if you write a guide that's 'urgently needed' but given the absolutely state of them i nthe past decade I'd be surprised the little amount of effort it would take to qualify

The bounty program dried up part way through RV's ownership. If I had to guess that's probably when talks to sell GameFAQs began. Presumably RV would stop the bounties so that they didn't get stuck paying people after selling the site.

I've pestered Toast about it a couple of times, but he hasn't given me a concrete answer one way or another. So for now I guess we're still playing the waiting game. Maybe I'll go bother him again soon.

I got paid $700 for Octopath Traveler. I think the highest I've seen was something like $3,000 for either Kingdom Hearts, God of War, or some other "massive" title like that. The low-end prices for smaller and less noteworthy games would typically be around $150-200. Not every game got bounties though, only those that seemed popular enough to actually want a guide. Pokemon, AAA releases, obscure JRPGs that no other site is going to cover. That sort of thing.

I like the system, but more care probably needed to be done to vet the contributions. There are a lot of guides under the bounty program that were clearly written as quickly as humanly possible in order to cash out a bounty and move on to the next one. Too many that were barely more than shit like
  • "Chapter 1: Defeat the Warbear in the Callous Mine"
  • Guide: Travel to Callous Mines located north of the map, and defeat the warbear located there.
  • "Chapter 2:..."

You're thinking of FAQ / Review of the Month awards, which went away in favor of Contributor of the Month, which I'm unsure if that's a thing anymore either.

Holy shit if I knew it was hundreds of dollars I would have written at least a couple guides. I remember when they first started and were like 50$ or something.

The original system was pretty low. The highest I ever saw under the old system was somewhere around $300 for Xenoblade 2, Heropon Riki and I raced for that one because the old system didn't have a way to lock bounties. Resulted in my writing a shit guide and Heropon won anyways. The average for those old games was like, $50 bucks here and there, the occasional $100 for something like Pokemon. The new system with locked bounties and higher pay was much better, but I still think it needed a vet process.

I've also heard from a select few contributors that even with that, other sites pay better or their guides have better features. Those same people are also pretty bitter though, so I tend not to give them much heed. I don't use other gaming sites anyways.
