Im at the squat rack doing back squats and I noticed this guy staring at me as soon as he walks into the gym. I ignore him. A few minutes later, a friend of mine asks me to show him how to deadlift with correct form so he sets up the deadlift right next to the squat rack. No biggie. I walk not even 5 steps over to him and as soon as I do, the same guy staring at me rushes into the squat rack and starts moving my things.

I tell him Hey, Im still using this rack nicely and he gets into my face and starts cursing me out. Like what the fuck? I tell him that he needs to get away from me because people are starting to stare. I didnt want to risk a physical altercation and be potentially banned from the gym or worse. He leaves but he spends the rest of the time staring at me. Im going to report him to the gym staff soon because theres no reason for that type of behavior.

For every dozen of nice and supportive people in the gym, theres always that one person who is an aggressive piece of garbage. I come to the gym to clear my mind and have some peace while lifting with my friends sometimes. Nobody should have to deal with this.

Shit like that feels intense and lingers in the mind. Report him and do something for self care

I like hanging out with friends when I deal with a shitty person that gets to me, reminds me that people can be fun too

He was definitely way in the wrong but squat racks are precious, depending on availability/busyness I'd be pretty annoyed if someone was casually coaching someone how to deadlift next to the squat rack while also hogging the squat rack.

The squat rack next to me was free. Yes, there were weights still on the bar but if he has asked me if someone was using the other rack, I would have told him no. Its not like I was even casually coaching my friend. It took not even 5 minutes to show him deadlift form.
I dont hog any of the gym equipment. If someone wants to use the equipment Im using, all they have to do is ask to hop in and Ill be cool with it.

I'll say again that his behaviour was way out of line and thats basically all there is to it, but since we're here -

most people could bust out a set or two of squats in 5 minutes, so I'd definitely be annoyed if someone had their stuff in the squat rack and they just weren't using it. Although if there was another squat rack free then no idea what his issue as.

He's 100% in the wrong, especially when he touched your stuff like that.

I'm honestly very glad that has never happened to me when I'm at the gym. For the most part, everyone I met has etiquette but that's probably because I downgraded from Gold Gym to Planet Fitness due to budget and it being walking distance for me, so definately more casual gym goers. If I stayed at Gold's Gym, I probably might've encountered someone like that.

For rest between heavy sets on the big three, I rest five minutes minimum. If I remember correctly it takes eight minutes of rest to get 95% recovery back.

He's literally not though. If TC was squatting in a rack and benching between sets on a flat bench, then that would be a dick move. But simply resting between squat sets and helping someone out isn't. Like if TC was asked to spot somebody benching would that make him a dick? No.

I've worked out at five different Gold's Gyms in my area and never encountered any douchebags, Hell I don't think I've ever encountered any mean gymgoers period. My current gym is full of juiceheads that are all swole as fuck so it's surprisingly wholesome to see these big dudes all encouraging each other. It's a nice change of pace from the YMCA which was filled with boomers that would chat each other up between sets

I'll definately say, I did get annoyed one time because someone was using the squat rack and during his "breaks" he was just texting on his phone for 5 minutes. I kindly went up to him and asked if he how may reps he got left and (I think he got embarassed) quickly said "oh yeah" and moved right out of there. I did tell the guy that if he needs to do more that's fine, but he was like "no man, I'm good. I'm really good."

Honestly, you're probably right. I remember my first day at the gym at 24 hours and I was a skinny lanky guy trying to do 25 pounds on each side for bench press. A really buff dude immediately runs to me and was like "hey man, you got nothing to prove here. We all start somewhere, so no one is going to judge you here. What you're doing here is going to hurt you in the long run. So here's the proper posture to do bench press correctly.". He was a complete random stranger, but I'll never forget the kindness he showed me. I only had good experiences going to the gym, except for that one time I got a really herniated disc (that required surgery to fix) because I was trying to show off to my cousins I can do a lot of weights doing squats lol.

Yes, but that wasnt what exactly happened. He made a beeline for the squat rack as soon as I stepped away like he was waiting. I could have gone to the restroom and he would have done the same thing. He had no idea why I initially stepped away from the squat rack. If I was hovering around my friend for a while, I could understand the confusion but I took a few steps out and he rushed into the squat rack immediately.

In fact, a few weeks ago, this same guy starting taking off the weights at the squat rack while I was standing there resting. That time, I told him I was still using it and he didnt even say anything to me. He just glared at me and walked away.

Hes far more guilty of poor gym etiquette than I am. I see him just sit at a squat rack for 10+ minutes at a time doing absolutely nothing some days.

Thanks for some of the support, guys. I couldnt meet with the gym nana get today but one of the employees gave me a way to contact him directly. Hopefully this can be prevented from happening again. Id hate for anyone else to have to experience what I did today in the gym. Its supposed to be a safe environment.
