I did the midnight release for Pokemon S/M.

I got a sweet poster and had a lot of fun chatting with others in line, for that experience alone it was worth it.

I was second in line at Walmart for 18 hours to get a Wii when those came out.

Also a few hours waiting for the midnight release of God of War III Collector's Edition, but there wasn't a line.

Just the Nintendo Wii. There were probably about 10 of us, and they let us hang out inside the Target, so we didn't even really "camp out", as much as hang out in the electronics/patio section for 6+ hours.

Midnight release for the Wii at a Target. The crowd was really cool and everyone got one. Like over 100 people. A real pleasant event. I was in middle school I think and it was just good vibes.

I went to a midnight launch for Halo 2 at Game Crazy, but there was also a tournament going on.

I also waited an hour or so because the truck that was delivering OoT was late. I kept going in and out of Babbages checking. Some dude also tried to trade his car for one of the gold cartridges.

I went to plenty of midnight releases at Nintendo World Store/Nintendo NY. I think the worst one was Pokemon XY release. I got in line at 5:30 pm for an event in Rockefeller Plaza that was supposed to go from 8 pm to midnight. The waiting line was featured in one of the anime specials, but it snaked down from 48th Street, around the corner up 6th, and around the corner going up 49th to circle the store. I didn't get to participate in the activities until nearly 11 pm (got my game by that point), but since I was dorming in a college in Newark at the time I wasn't going to get back home and walk back to my room past midnight so I was only able to stay for a few minutes.

I've done midnight releases at the store for Smash 3DS, Pokemon SM, USUM, SwSh, BDSP, PLA, SV and probably others and I love going to them. We get free cool prizes like tote bags, posters, pens and notebooks, pins, etc. For the later launches Nintendo NY makes you sign up for a timeslot (only 2 times available, usually midnight and 1 am but if it's a morning launch then 9 am and 10 am) and you use your Nintendo account to prevent scalping reservations. The most popular time slots (midnight and 9 am) sell out in an instant. For SV I camped the reservation page and refreshed every second until it appeared and I was able to get the popular midnight timeslot, and somehow it sold out in less than 2 minutes.

I have other local friends I would meet up with and talk to sometimes at these midnight releases, the hard part is staying out in the cold weather so you have to bundle up. Most Pokemon games are in November, PLA was in January. I remember during E3 2018, Nintendo NY hosted a special demo for Smash Ultimate at 9 am but at that time I think it was still first come, first serve line, so I had to take a 7 am bus to get on line by 8 am. Luckily you usually don't need to camp in front of the store, especially since Nintendo NY doesn't allow you to line up until 1 hour before your time.

I wasnt entirely sober, so my memory is vague, but I know I had a blast. I do remember them playing a number of tracks where Newstead was covering vocals. I can confirm Seek and Destroy being one of those.

Feels like an eternity ago.

Yeah, if you're waiting in line for Metallica tickets, I don't expect any different experience, haha.

You remember if it was in a stadium or still like a 5000 person venue? I know they made the switch around that time.

Did it twice. Stood outside for Battlefield 3 with my dad and uncle at GameStop. Everyone there was all about "F*** COD!!!" I even got to skip school to play Battlefield 3 with my dad. A part of me misses that culture for video-games. I personally believe it was a great father-son moment.

Then there was the Switch, which was literally spur of the moment. Already preordered one, but I was at Walmart to pay off the special edition of BotW I preordered, but then I saw everyone in line. That's when I realized that I could get a Switch right then and there, and so I decided to wait. Called my friend up to wait with me, and we talked with the other people there about random stuff. Was such a fun night. Even though I was only a few weeks away, I wouldn't trade those first few works at all, as it was great times! BotW in the lobby with the boys! Then we finished the last few weeks off with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Stadium capacity of 20,000. Just looked it up. Cant imagine how awesome it must have been to see them in the smaller venues.

Modern Warfare 2 (2009)
Halo Reach
GTAV

Longest wait time-wise was Reach, a few friends and I got to Gamestop around 8pm.

Longest line was GTAV but they had a good system with splitting everyone into separate lines depending on 360, PS3, collectors editions, etc so even though we got there around 10:30 I was back in the car by 12:15

Digital pre-loading is super convenient and required downloads to play have killed the midnight launchbut damn it were those some fun ass nights

I camped out for the PlayStation 3 back in 2006, and it was so freaking cold. I said never again. Paid somebody to camp out for the PlayStation 4 and 5

Even though its not a full day/night of camping out, I went to the Superdome at 3 AM when they were set to open at 8 am for student tickets to the national championship in 2007. It paid off, because I ended up getting second row tickets

Did it for Black Ops 2 even though I had injured knee at the time. Figured if I was going to be laid up might as well get the game. It was a good move in the end. Although not the best black ops game.

Done more movies for midnight premiers. Dark Knight Rises. All the Avengers movies. A few others in probably forgetting.

Dude, right?

I gotta say though, I respect what they did with their sound for "The Black Album." They made it more stadium sounding cause they knew they were trending upwards.

My best large-band-playing-in-a-small-venue was when I went to see Biffy Clyro at a 600 person capacity club in Montreal, Canada. They're a Scottish band that regularly headlines Reading and Leeds. Have headlined the Glastonbury festivals and all that other shit in Europe to 70000 people.
This was also in 2018, when they'd already done all that. They just aren't that big in NA, I guess.
