I just read a thread where someone was complaining how Link to the Past was too difficult and that all the bosses were damage sponges that they tried to stat-check and lost against.

There are no words. I imagine they drank from a sippy cup until they were 8 years old.

It's not that unbelievable that people would have a harder time with games that they didn't grow up playing, if they are accustomed to the QoL improvements that gaming in general has seen since then.

I had problems with bosses when I was younger in games I can stomp now.

If I played those same games fresh (no experience) today, I'd probably have some issues. Especially if it's a gameplay style I'm not super familiar with.

Years of conditioning. Games are easy now, paying for progress is an option.
A lot of games are just a generic walk through cinematics until the end.
There's less of a troubleshooting process when they get stuck and more abject helplessness.

i realized from playing older adventure games that they used to be more obtuse. like moon logic BS.

id say the best example i can think of is the rubber ducky part of The Longest Journey. It involves combining a rubber ducky with a vice so you can pick up a certain object stuck on some electric rail.

of course, you have to first obtain the rubber ducky by feeding some birds a piece of bread that you obtain at a club. to feed the birds you have to click on the bread and click on a rubber ducky on a river. the birds will swoop in and move a grill on a river and you can grab the grill by pulling some chains. you won't immediately get the rubber ducky tho. the birds moving the debris combined with dropping something else (i think a clothesline?) causes the rubber ducky to flow over to some drain in another map or area which you have to pick up. pretty well hidden too and i only found it by clicking on literally everything in the screen across several different areas (at this point of the game there are like a dozen accessible areas >.<)

i first thought the rubber ducky (which you actually do see briefly flowing across the river after removing the debris) was just there for laughs or something. did not realize i had to combine it with a vice till i started to combine everything in my inventory.

That has always been a weak excuse to me. I've never assumed a game would play a certain way because others played the same.

Probably not.

Comically enough, it was millennials that started the trend of complaining about Dark Souls difficulty and dumbing down franchises for a more casual market. It was also millennials who gave rise to the popularity of hand-holding and walking sims in gaming. Gen Z are only following up on that attitude set by their predecessors.

also aint gen z into those games where you have to repeat it if you die. i forgot genre name lmao

they are generally 2d sidescrollers with an emphasis on crafting shit. also they seem to require guides to even be somewhat competent. pretty sure a huge chunk of that community are gen z based on steam discussion posts.

Because devs have been dumbing games down for the past twenty years to the point where some games play it's self and the player is in no danger of ever losing.

The sales figures don't lie; millenials are indeed responsible for the dumbed down games, the success of hand-holding mechanics and whatnot. Money talks louder than words. Zoomers didn't create that atmosphere; they just arrived into it.
