Signing Draft Picks Quite a few teams have done it already, but now's the time to get those draftees' signatures and have them suit up for your squad. It is essentially just like signing your own free agents, but you don't have to worry about holdouts/franchise tags, and you typically have far fewer players to sign. There are a few things you need to keep in mind as you read your PM. One, you will not know the overall ratings until they are signed. That is an in-game mechanic and not something by my design. Two, the desired deals for each player, in terms of length, is based on where they were taken. It is as follows: Top 5 - Six years 6-10 - Five years 11-32 - Four years 2nd-4th rounds - Three years 5th-7th rounds - One year Once again, you do not have to offer them their exact deals and can change their length, but I advise you to sign them to the length that they ask for because if you change the length, they might ask for considerably more money. The deadline to sign your rookies will be Monday, May 1st at 8 PM ET. Should you idle, I will sign all your rookies to the deals that they are asking for (such a severe punishment I know). If you have roster space issues, then I will prioritize players who will fill roster holes and then in descending order of when they were selected until your roster is filled. --- KCF can't actually be a real person but he is - greengravy ... KCF's Favorite Picks I'm going to go through each round of the NFL Draft and highlight my favorite picks and explain why. For the most part, I look in the early rounds for perfect team fits based on historical production, a visible succession plan to a successful starting job (or immediate starter), players who might be the missing piece to the puzzle, and selections that just make me think, "That guy's going to have a long, productive career somewhere." For the later rounds, I look for players who most likely have a chance of sticking around for a long-ish career for a myriad of reasons. While I do know some of the rookie ratings due to user signings, ratings were not a factor in my analysis nor were players dropping further than expected draft slot. Changing up how I did things in previous years, I'm no longer doing a regret pick (perhaps just for this draft). I'm doing the normal three for the first two rounds, but I'm lowering it to two each in rounds 3 and 4, and one for each of the final three rounds. Maybe I won't be spending hours doing this with the reductions. --- KCF can't actually be a real person but he is - greengravy ... Copied to Clipboard!

KCF0107 04/25/23 9:10:13 PM #122: |
First Round Bills DE Dean Lowery (7th overall) - For a team that has spent a lot of resources on high-end defensive players, the defense hasn't really come together despite some great individual seasons, including a co-MVP from MLB Paul Worrilow. With the caveat that Madden-generated era DEs tend to not be as complete players as those from the import era, I like the potential of Lowery having an impact on a largely stout front seven with questionable starting DEs. Historically the best rushing division of the past 10 or so seasons, the AFC East might be more in the middle this upcoming season, so this could be a good starting point for Lowery as he hopes to help the Bills get over the hump and compete for a Wild Card spot. Cowboys HB Phillip Lindsay (14th overall) - I mentioned this in the doc where I made every pick in the first round, but the lack of playoff appearances for the Cowboys in recent seasons is strongly linked to how poorly they have been in the running game. Time is running out for their DL and QB Cam Newton. HB Devonta Freeman has played in 17 of 32 games in his two seasons with Dallas. While HBs tend to have slow starts to their career in terms of effectiveness and efficiency, it isn't impossible by any means to have a high-impact rookie season at the position. Should Freeman get injured yet again, I have more faith Lindsay making impact than most rookie HBs. Even if a playoff appearance doesn't come to fruition this season, the only other HB the team took in the first round went on to make the Hall of Fame. Bengals WR Kenny Golladay (17th overall) - This offense has been elite the past two seasons. With the retirement of Josh Briscoe, the #1 WR job is wide open. I'm assuming that Golladay's rating will be high enough to trigger a battle for the #1 spot. If it is, and he wins, he could thrive as a mere rookie and eventually find himself as one of the best WRs in the league at some point in his career. Honorable Mention Browns OLB Andrew Van Ginkel (8th overall) --- KCF can't actually be a real person but he is - greengravy ... Copied to Clipboard!

KCF0107 04/25/23 9:39:08 PM #123: |
Second Round Jaguars C Darryl Walker (41st overall) - Now the Jags are planning to be players in free agency to some degree. Whether that means they are planning to target a starting C is unknown to me, but for the purposes of this side project, I'm assuming that Walker will be the Week 1 starting C. The Jags have always had strong play from the position, with their most famous performer being the new Hall of Famer Kyle Young. Walker would be coming into a strong OL unit helping block for a HB group that just added a 1st round talent and already employs Eddie Lacy who is coming off of a career-best 4.3 YPC season. If they can get that passing game figured out to where they are around a league-average unit, this could be a sneaky great offense, which would help his development. The Colts last season had a highly-drafted rookie C start for them, and he ended up out-performing their rookie LT and helped the offense end up in the top half of the league after years of being toward the bottom. Walker could make that sort of impact as well. Jets DT Harrison Phillips (44th overall) - With the retirement of Charles Alexander, one of the last remaining players from the Fenny era, the future for the interior DL of the Jets is wide open for the taking. While he should be competing for an immediate starting job, Phillips can make an impact as a rotational DT for a team that tends to have one of the better outputs from that role. That could give him enough of a developmental boost to increase his chances of getting starting opportunities for an underrated defense. Buccaneers OT Greg Little (47th overall) - Once a team who OL really struggled outside of Orlando Franklin, the OL has been one of the better performers the past few seasons. With retirements and a trade, the depth is really thin for this team that has been on an upward trajectory. Enter Little who could very well wind up being a swing OL for a young but talented and highly-drafted offensive skill group. While OL are no longer the safest pick to draft high, I feel confident about Little's chances to play well and make an impact no matter the role. Honorable Mention Cowboys OLB Sione Takitaki (46th overall) --- KCF can't actually be a real person but he is - greengravy ... Copied to Clipboard!

KCF0107 04/25/23 9:54:58 PM #124: |
Third Round Titans HB Ito Smith (68th overall) - Ever since Melvin Gordon started getting injured after carrying the ball more than 1000 times across his first two seasons, the Titans have had backups get plenty of snaps each season, including former FB Alexander Armah having 100+ carries in each of the two previous seasons. With the Titans' backups from a season ago, as well as Armah, gone those touches will likely go to Smith more than anyone. Every season, you see some 2nd-4th rounder, not specifically a rookie mind you, get an opportunity and run with it and become the starter there, somewhere else, or become a quality journeyman injury pickup. I just get those vibes from Smith. Dolphins G Mitch Winfield (91st overall) - With the depth of the Dolphins OL nowhere near where it was even just a couple of seasons ago, there's no obvious successor to the 38-year-old Max Jean Gilles. That player might not be on this roster, but if Winfield is that guy, he could be playing opposite of Laurent Duvernay-T, whose outstanding career includes five Pro Bowls in six seasons and nearly 10 blocks per sack allowed, as well as right next to a starting C whom the current and previous players at the position have recorded 129 blocks vs 11 sacks allowed the past three seasons. While he likely would be blocking for a QB and HB who aren't Sam Keller or Jacquizz Rodgers, I really like the recent history of this interior OL to think it will still be highly effective in the future. Honorable Mention Falcons MLB Marco Wilkins (83rd overall) --- KCF can't actually be a real person but he is - greengravy ... Copied to Clipboard!

KCF0107 04/25/23 10:21:24 PM #125: |
Fourth Round Jaguars TE Irv Smith Jr. (106th overall) - Like with their 2nd round C, the Jags may very well have plans to grab a starter in free agency for all I know. I am operating as if Smith will be the starter though. Irv Smith Jr.'s scouting report made it seem like he could be a good blocker and a decent pass-catcher. Two such players who fit that mold went on to become 2/3 of our TE Hall of Famers, including former Jag Brent Celek. Now the QB play and passing game as a whole has been pretty weak for awhile, so it is very possible that Smith's apparent skill set might not translate into production and impact for awhile or even at all. If that area improves, they get be getting a poor man's Celek, which the Jags would certainly be pleased with. Browns MLB Antonio Barber (119th overall) - If the Browns run a 3-4, Barber becomes a starter alongside MVP David Harris, one-time Pro Bowler Kwon Alexander, and Top 10 pick Andrew Van Ginkel. If they run a 4-3, he will be the backup to a 33-year-old MLB with plenty of snaps coming his way, likely alongside Kwon and Ginkel. It's a win-win scenario for Barber, and with MLBs, along with SS, being easier defensive positions to develop lower-end backups to a fringe-starter rating, Barber could have a long future as a starter or backup ahead of him. Honorable Mention Eagles QB Tiki Tucker (120th overall) --- KCF can't actually be a real person but he is - greengravy ... Copied to Clipboard!

KCF0107 04/25/23 10:57:54 PM #126: |
Fifth Round Pioneers OT Alex Moes (154th overall) - There are plenty of 4-3 rotational DTs, backup interior OL, and a backup MLB here. Odds are some of these will be re-signed. One or more may end up becoming future full-time starters. I don't feel like throwing a dart and guess who among them would have the best odds. Instead, I will go to Moes who will play for a great offense and under a very good OL where he is currently the only backup OT. What his rating is, who the Pioneers sign to fill out the final spot (they could even sign multiple!), and what kind of preseason battles there may be could make this shoutout moot. As things are currently constructed, RT Reggie Harris is an oft-injured starter and Moes could end up first in line to take over the spot. We could have a surprise RotY candidate or a future Breakout Player of the Year in Moes. Sixth Round Jets SS Kirk Smith (172nd overall) - If you want a SS who has higher odds of being developed into a future starter somewhere, the Raiders and Steelers took a SS this round and have history of that happening at least once. The Jets however, just had their backup SS lead the league in INTs, and Smith is going to fill that exact role. Performance > ratings, so I'm inclined to roll with Smith purely for what his predecessor did. Seventh Round Broncos TE Hank Rice (210th overall) - I will avoid the easy answer of the Packers P selection as they have the clearest path to playing time and Pro Bowls. Backup TEs tend to not stand out and if they are ever signed to a second contract, it's usally with another team as the beginning of a journeyman career. Orcas TE Joel Albright had an obscene rookie year as a 7th round rookie, and that translated to becoming the starting TE for a Super Bowl champion. The likeliest, best-case scenario for Rice is the journeyman career. However, his scouting report suggests that he could be a decent offensive weapon and blocker, not unlike incumbent and two-time Pro Bowler Dwayne Allen. Allen is 34. If there is the potential for one of the 7th round rookie TEs to be re-signed and eventually be promoted to full-time starter, I like Rice's odds. --- KCF can't actually be a real person but he is - greengravy ... Favorite Draft Classes Dallas Cowboys HB Phillip Lindsay (14th overall) OLB Sione Takitaki (46th) WR Marco Bryant (78th) DT Jaret Wagner (110th) QB Dee Woods (142nd) SS Kevin Smith (174th) CB Torry Ward (206th) A highly-skilled, veteran team took some great insurance policies and potential starters down the road. They've been a little light on depth as a whole for a few seasons, which has reared its ugly head with late season collapses, but this is a strong class to me. Lindsay is of course the headliner, but Wagner is worth monitoring given the Cowboys' history of rotational DTs becoming future starters (Dominic Lee being the most famous) and the advanced age of their current star duo. Jacksonville Jaguars HB Marlon Mack (20th overall) C Darryl Walker (41st) DE Mario Wasserman (73rd) DT Cody Vuong (105th) TE Irv Smith Jr. (106th) QB Ivan Martin (137th) WR Aaron Henley (169th) C Wally Smith (201st) The Jaguars too have suffered late-season collapses to end up outside of the playoffs. It is unlikely that this draft class will have an especially high impact right away, but there's a lot of future appeal here in regards to Mack, Wasserman, and Vuong. Walker and Smith Jr. are expected to be Week 1 starters, and C and TE are positions that are more prone to volume-based development, so they could quickly rise up in rating before the end of their contracts. Every year there's some Day 3 interior OL chosen that make their mark and have a long career as a journeyman or starter, so Wally has some appeal. Given the Jags are one of the more loyal organizations around, Wally's odds of sticking around may be higher than most. Mexico City Browns OLB Andrew Van Ginkel (8th overall) G David Edwards (55th) CB Barry Hilliard (109th) WR Chris Smith (112th) MLB Antonio Barber (119th) HB Jason Moss (151st) G Matt Jackson (183rd) Since there are certain teams that I don't put under consideration or this list, there really isn't a third team that I feel strongly positive toward. I suppose the Bengals, Bucs, or Dolphins would be my third pick, but I'm guessing people would rather see a second user team here, so I'm going with the Browns. I really like the trade up and selection of Van Ginkel. If they would have stayed put, the OLBs, SSs, and TE Fant would have been gone. I think that the best player for the team at that point would have ironically been the player the Wildcats selected with the same pick, DT Maliek Collins. Instead, they get a blue-chip prospect and with the additional picks they got from the trade, they selected CB Hilliard and WR Smith who will compete for slot duties at their respective positions. They won't be counted on to do the most important work, but they could get some valuable playing time as rookies. MLB Barber is the sleeper here as someone who will either start alongside a great LB group or will get plenty of rotational work behind reigning MVP David Harris (who is 33). Depending on what the Browns plan to do in free agency, Edwards could compete for a starting G spot along with 2nd-year player Jack Driscoll who disappointed with 4 blocks and 3 sacks allowed in limited time. --- KCF can't actually be a real person but he is - greengravy ... AI Trade #1 Buccaneers receive: HB James Connor (81 overall, 25 years old) Wildcats receive: ROLB Bobby Cameron (78, 23) LE Travis Holcombe (72, 23) Buccaneers will incur a $960k cap penalty to turn $4.97 mil in cap hits into a $3.96 mil cap hit Wildcats will incur a $710k cap penalty to turn a $4.67 mil cap hit into $4.27 mil in cap hits Both teams had excess as the respective positions that they traded and needs at what they received. The Buccaneers avoid a potential Knile Davis "problem" by acquiring a decent backup HB that probably won't get in the way of Alvin Kamara. The Wildcats are trying to clear some cap space for free agency and get a little bit of savings while filling in multiple holes. Each player has been in the league for two seasons strictly as a backup, so their limited playing time wasn't really a factor in this trade. Wildcats understood the trade parameters, financial impact, histories of players involved, and what each team hoped to achieve. --- KCF can't actually be a real person but he is - greengravy ... AI Trade #2 Broncos receive: HB Dalvin Cook (88, 24) Wildcats receive: HB Kenyan Drake (87, 25) Broncos will incur a $1.06 mil cap penalty to turn a $6.26 mil cap hit into an $8.32 mil cap hit Wildcats will incur a $1.49 mil cap penalty to turn a $9.81 mil cap hit into a $5.10 mil cap hit Drake was taken with the 1st rounder that the Broncos received from the Bears when the latter signed SS Derek Linde in RFA. Drake began as a backup, but in three seasons since, he has been inconsistent and constantly injured (missed 11, 11, and 7 games the past three seasons). He has 937 yards in four seasons with a career 3.7 YPC, having been benched by the in-season signings by players such as Knowshon Moreno, Giovanni Bernard, and Melvin Gordon. This is a change of scenery trade for both parties, but especially the Broncos who get a healthy but similarly inefficient HB in the final year of his deal that they can easily walk away from. The Wildcats had fully intended on letting Cook ride out his contract and hoping that his incrementally improved play (yardage of 350, 812, and 1098 and YPC of 3.2, 3.4, and 3.8) could continue upward with an overhauled OL. Unfortunately, all the wheeling and dealing by the team left with them a large draft class that semi-ruined their free agency plans. The best solution was to save cap space by trading disappointing HBs in hopes that a change of scenery is what they needed. Drake's injury history and ineffectiveness was previously mentioned, but he does have higher highs in his career. The risk-reward was acceptable enough to move ahead and make the trade. Wildcats understood the trade parameters, financial impact, histories of players involved, and what each team hoped to achieve. --- KCF can't actually be a real person but he is - greengravy ... Free Agency See all those players in the free agent sheet? Now is the time to attempt to sign them to your team ahead of the preseason. I say attempt because you are in theory competing against the other 31 teams for the services of all available free agents. Unlike the three offseason events involving signings, the base/desired deal that I will eventually list may not be enough to sign them, and more likely will not if it is one of the premier free agents available. If you do intend to seek out one or more of those players, you will probably want to send out a custom offer in excess of what they want, whether that means years, total money, signing bonus, or what's usually the case, a combination of the three. You may not offer a contract to a player that goes beyond their age 34 season unless the base deal already extends beyond that. If a free agent is 31 right now and wants a two-year contract, you may go as far as four years because that would take him through his age-34 season (31, 32, 33, 34). If another free agent is also 31 and wants a five-year contract, you can offer him those five years but no more than that. Any player 28 and under is not affected by this rule as the max contract length, seven years, will take them through their age-34 season or younger. Not every free agent is up on the sheet. I would estimate that somewhere around 20-30% of all free agents are there. The free agent sheet just lists the Top 8 and Bottom 2 at each position. If there's a certain kind of player that you are looking for that either isn't or don't know if they are on the sheet, feel free to ask me, and I will get back to you if such a player fits that description. There will be three periods of free agency, each subsequent period spanning fewer real life days than the previous one. Here are the tentative real life days each period will last: 1st - 7 days 2nd - 4 days 3rd - 1 day Here are some sample contract offers that I will accept, including to more simple approaches: 4 / $12.00 mil / $3.00 mil 3 years default + $2 mil total salary + $750k signing bonus 2 years default When you give me an offer, you are offering my consent to offer the player the closest deal that he will consider, meaning that if you offer 4 / $12.00 mil / $3.00 mil and he will only consider it when it is 4 / $13.00 mil / $3.60 mil, I will offer him the latter. If that does not sit well with you, then you have the simpler options I previously laid out or you can explicitly say not to offer the contract unless he will consider those exact terms. When you PM me the offers, I want you to include a header that says "[Your Team]'s Offers" so that I don't accidentally open them. In addition to being the commissioner, I am also in charge of the Wildcats, so there could be some conflict of interest. Thus, the best way around that is for me to not open those PMs until the deadline for the current phase has passed. I have default PM settings, so you can tell if and when I open a PM of yours. Out of fairness, I will publicly reveal my offers once the deadline has passed and before I open up any PMs. Under no circumstances may you ask me if so and so player will consider a certain deal or anything of that nature. You may ask me general questions regarding free agency but nothing that goes against the spirit of it or give you a competitive advantage. If you do have a question and use the PM system instead of the topic or Discord, make sure that you are clear that you are asking a question, or I might not open it out of fear the PM will contain contract offers. Last season was the first time ever nobody ever violated that rule, so let's make that a trend. There are two types of contract offers that I will immediately discard: 1. Any mentioning of the word maximum pertaining to total salary and/or signing bonus 2. A massive one year contract (possibly two-year contracts depending on the situation) The first one I have actually received in the past. I threw it out because it is both unfair in the laziest of ways and also impossible as you can go quite high in total salary, and I do not want to spend 30 minutes inputting a single offer. The second one is also unfair to teams with lots of cap space to maintain artificial flexibility for future seasons by using up a lot of cap space this season and then sign that same player next season to an uncontested market or below-market contract in the following offseason in a process they can repeat as many times as they can/want. Also due to fairness, any cuts you wish to make during free agency must be done well ahead of time to give other users enough of a chance to make a bid on their services: - 96 hours prior to the end of Period 1 - 48 hours prior to the end of Period 2 - No cuts allowed in Period 3 Most users should have been told when they signed their rookies in the spreadsheet, Discord, or via PM of their cap space and roster holes entering free agency. If I did not, feel free to consult the roster sheet and compare with the roster requirements listed in the first column or ask me what your holes are. Should free agency end with there still being holes on your roster, the AI will fill those holes for you. You do not have to be under the salary cap at the end of free agency. I will give users several days after free agency ends to do so. One big thing that I want to add is that many positions are very sensitive to starting status relative to their rating. QBs, HBs, FSs, CBs, and several other positions have expectations to start when they are around 82 or above. If you desire to sign someone at 82+ and are not expecting them to start for you, I highly urge you to offer them a contract no longer than 2 years in length. It is possible that they might demand a trade after just one season, but attempting to sign them to a 1 or 2 year deal will significantly reduce the financial penalty you would be dealt with if having to move on from them while they are still under contract. --- KCF can't actually be a real person but he is - greengravy ... Trade Packers receive: DT Austin Johnson (80 overall, 23 years old) Raiders receive: SS Andrew Wingard (80, 24) Packers will incur a $700k cap penalty to turn a $2.89 mil cap hit into a $3.90 mil cap hit Raiders will incur a $760k cap penalty to turn a $4.66 mil cap hinto into a $2.19 mil cap hit The Packers have a big need a DT, and while Wingard was expected to be their starting SS, there are better starting options at SS in free agency than DT, and with their cap space, they can afford to get a new one there. The Raiders are under a cap crunch, and since they operate under a 3-4, an 80+ backup DT is a luxury they could easily part with to find a comparable talent to fill a hole elsewhere and save some money. Both teams demonstrated that they understood the trade parameters, financial impact, histories, and what each team hoped to achieve. This trade is now official. --- KCF can't actually be a real person but he is - greengravy ... Copied to Clipboard!
