There was a TV show called Life.
One of the episodes follows the investigation around what appears to be a hate crime against some Persian college students and then it's revealed that they were selling drugs. Apparently, for some reason, one of the drug dealers kept his records hidden in a drug-addled modified version of Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones (presumably this game was used because of the Middle Eastern victims).
Now, here's the funny part: in order to access the Excel files containing all the records of drug-trafficking and cash locations, it seems that players have to reach "level 10". One would think keeping such information on a separate flash drive or something similar would make more sense in case one needed speedy access, but whatever. Anyway, the police figure this out through some bizarre leap of logic, and then it turns out that computer technician in the department really sucks at the game (which is apparently so exciting that an entire crowd forms around him to cheer him on as he plays). The drug dealer's sister, though, is seen watching and playing along on an invisible controller, so she's led into the room and proceeds to whoop ass as The Prince and his counterpart.
And WHAM, Level 10 and suddenly the Excel file opens in Office on the Xbox.

People give the NCIS scene with the two morons on the keyboard and the gruff dude pulling the monitor plug so much shit, but it's honestly genuinely funny and they're clearly playing it for a laugh.

Whereas stuff like the CSI "GUI interface in visual basic to track the killer" scene is played 100% seriously and nobody in the scene has any clue what they're saying.

I said WTF out loud when she did it.

Most tv shows or movie that features "high tech" apparatus and hacker characters are cringe

Computers are best in movies when they are magical objects where you can do amazing things by sticking in a disc or rattling the keyboard for 5 seconds

Tbh I think the average person probably would do that without a second thought. My employer's security training has a whole section about not plugging in random unknown USB devices

This made my back spasm.

I'm literally updating an arcade machine right now by thumbdrive and thinking of all the things that could go wrong and would be the supplier's issue

I watched a show a while back where the private investigator who was tailing someone started taking pictures of them with their phone and their phone made the shutter sound with every picture they took lol

I think you need to make friends with more tech support/data security people if you think it isn't 100% believable that someone would do that

You might like Mr. Robot, OP. There's a bit in the first season where this dumb street dudebro offers a guy a CD of his mix tape. When he puts it into his computer, it turns out to be malware and the "dumb dudebro" ends up blackmailing him into corporate espionage over some sex pictures.

I remember when that first aired. My wife and I were verbally shredding that whole sequence.

But the CEO said there will be negative staff feedback if we disable USB drives so we cant do it

On sitcoms back in the 80s and 90s. So many times for one show the family would get a Nintendo or something. And it just on the of the TV not plugged in

X-Files episode on video games was cringe. The game company was name First-Person Shooter.
Jack Black was in that episode, iirc.

This reminds me of when my mom went to some medical discussion convention where they handed out free usb thumb drives. I took one look at that unmarked (outside of the size), unpackaged, 128mb drive and said "hell no" and told her to not use it either.

That episode of Life was ahead of its time iirc. Isn't there a line about "a console is just a hard drive with games on it".

That's kinda where we're at with console games today.
