I think it was way ahead of its time and I didn't play all the Zelda games until a few months before BotW came out. A narrative based on gameplay mechanics. You don't see meta stories like that too often in games. The effect isn't cheap either; it's throughlined throughout the game from minor to major ways. There are implications for playing the game and stakes for not playing it.

My 2nd favorite one is probably Link Between Worlds, but Majora's Mask ascends beyond Zelda and is just an amazing narrative experience otherwise. I also thought the gameplay was nice, the different transformations (which have to do with the theme), the way the dungeon worked as a whole unit (not that it's unique to MM but I like those kinda dungeons), and although the sidequests were kind of vague in the N64 version, it's cool that it's done by interacting with the people of the world (which have to do with the theme).

It sure sounds damn creative but also frustrating so even never playing it, I'd take Link to the Past over it and that wasn't even the first one I played!

Worst.

It's not my top favorite, but it's high up there. Four dungeons was just too few.

Not for me, personally. Though I did find it enjoyable.

It's my personal favorite and as an overall gaming experience I'd rank it the best in the franchise.

Seriously just play it when you get the chance. >___> Not because it's the best ever, but because complaints about the time system are overstated to hell and if you're playing an emulated version (like on Switch), save states mitigate the only two times in the whole game that you might get screwed. (The sidequest for obtaining the gilded sword, and the Anju/Kafei sidequest. The former because the race minigame can be bullshit, and the latter because it's non unreasonable that a new player might fuck up the mini-dungeon at the last second)

My favorite gaming essay/article is called "Majora's Mask - Nintendo's Fluke" but it's not the best Zelda game.

Couldn't get past the base concept of the game. Never gave it a legit chance.

In retrospect, I feel like I probably missed out. I just don't think it will wow me like it would have back then. I voted No because regardless of how good it could have been, it lost me upfront and thus could not become the best Zelda of all time. But I admit I didn't give it a fair chance.

The three best zeldas are Majora's Mask, Link's Awakening and Wind Waker

It is for me. It's my second favorite game of all time behind Chrono Trigger.

I would rank Majora's Mask #8 on my top Zelda list. It's a great game, I just like others in the series more.

No. I beat it, but its low on my list of Zelda games.

No. I like it, and it has all the ingredients of a game that I would otherwise love to death. But the time-loop mechanic hampers what I normally enjoy most about adventure / exploration games (doing things at my own pace), and Goron Rolling is one of my all-time most hated gaming mechanics.

Also, a not-insignificant chunk of the soundtrack is downright nauseating. Granted that's what they were going for in most cases - it sure does sell the concept of a cursed, poisoned swamp, for instance - but that doesn't make it enjoyable to listen to.

Hard no.

It's easily my favorite Zelda, but I think from an objective standpoint, OOT is the better game. OOT just feels a bit more "complete" where MM is lacking in a few areas (that I personally think add charm) but from an objective lens, OOT is better.
