Obviously not anytime soon, but do you think GTA (or another game with a city map as large as GTA) will ever get to the point where each building, house, etc is fully fleshed out?

maybe not specifically GTA, but yes, and probably sooner than you think. Procedurally generated rooms though, not handcrafted

That's something that sounds cooler than it actually would be in practice. I'd go in 10 back to back and be over the gimmick lol

I feel like there's a risk (and this is probably why GTA style games are barely made anymore) that the more realistic you push things the worse it actually holds up.

Like think of the sheer variety of homes, buildings and stores you can enter in day to day life. Even if it was randomly generated how is that going to actually hold up?

I think the best solution for this could maybe be player generated content that the game lifts from but even that would be a huge push forward of handling all of that data.

Yeah I can see that. The only 2 roadblocks I can think of is the size of the game (which wont be an issue as hardware advances) and the development time. If the rooms/buildings auto-generate, or are simply pre designed with the help of AI I could see it working.

Honestly if they stopped trying to continuously make the games bigger, they could easily accomplish this in six. Or at the least, have maybe half them accessible.

I was gonna say a fleshed out fully lived in apartment complex would be cool enough. But that's already happened in games like Deus Ex, Im pretty sure

Yeah games like Hitman and Deus Ex do an amazing job recreating like a city block. But the scale for that work in an open world city would be crazy.

I like it to feel like gta is real and also when I'm running away from 4 stars I like to hide in the quickest nearby building preferably under a table or bed to be safe from the cops hunting me.

I use to want this, however there are to many down sides. Look at Skyrim after you went in your 5th cave to get a bandit , they all look a like. And that is how building will be. Just a color change here or there .

With the direction AI and other procedural generation is going, I wouldn't be shocked if GTA 7 has it. But that doesn't say a lot since GTA 7 will probably be out in like 2040.

But well get some sort of open world game where all the buildings are enterable by 2027. Though I imagine your average building would be pretty dull.

That's no city in the real world where every building is accessible. At least tell us when a door is locked or needs a key if it's meant to be accessible. I can't stand when games have doors that are just part of the background. It's not as bad as invisible walls but still annoying

If GTA tried to get down to that level, they'd have to make the buildings procedurally generated. Which would make the game worse, because procedurally generated is always a dumb gimmick that doesn't make anything better.

AI is eventually gonna make games more expansive and creative than we can even imagine

15 years I bet. Just look at how rapidly image and audio generation have improved in such a short time

Probably not and that's probably for the best. When GTA3 came out I thought the future of open world games would mean like highly dense cities and shit. Now that we're well into the future of games from then, it's pretty clear that open world games aren't really going for that. They're all pretty much making the largest environments that they possibly can, and it isn't feasible to create depth in maps that vast.

Even if an AI could generate a varied amount of interiors that all make sense they'd still have a long way to go.

Presumably you'd want NPC's to be in those interiors. So what they do in there also needs to make sense. Do they now have day/night cycles? Do they get in and out of bed? What do they do when idle? How do they respond to you intruding? How much of this is varied and believable?

That's just houses. What about offices? Do they have security guards?

Just think of the sheer variety real life has compared to a video game. They can barely develop open world cities as is. Which is why most open world games have gone for ancient or post-apocalyptic settings.

I feel like if they do that, it's just going to be boring. Most of them would have to be randomly generated, and randomly generated maps aren't really unique or interesting.

When have you seen an A.I. generated map? That's not the same as "random generated".

My initial reaction is to ask why you would want to, but then I think about AC Unity and what set its city apart was the fact that you could cut through building interiors. Granted, the rooms were all prefab and looked incredibly similar, but just having the ability to traverse the city by passing through those spaces made it feel so much bigger and more alive than all the AC games where the building are just big impenetrable blocks.

Seems like a waste as they'd just have a super basic layout with nothing going on in them. I'd prefer they condense the map and put more meaniful things in it.

I mean in battle royale games now we have entire maps where you can enter every building like Fortnite, Warzone, and PUBG. I realize it's different and not an entire city worth of places, but I think it could be done with the size of a city like Liberty City in GTA3 at this point.
