video games???

It's been a few months since I did a playthrough topic on here. I own the first 4 games listed, the next 3 are on game pass, and I'd have to buy the other two. Pls pick one that'd you think would make a good topic to follow. I'll get through all of these at some point but I won't make topics for them all.

I've noted below what I currently know+think about each game.

  • Triangle Strategy (Switch): I'm a fan of SRPGs and heard the morality system in this is complex and interesting, which if true excites me! Worried it might be a bit slow though based on the debut demo.
  • 13 Sentinels (Switch): I know the story's supposed to be great, and it's an anime VN-like with SRPG elements. Other than that I have no idea what to expect.
  • Tales of the Abyss (3DS): Vesperia is the only series entry I've played, and I liked that but didn't love it. Yuri was great and there were some interesting plot developments but the game really fell off later on and there's some eye-roll anime cliches throughout.
  • Zero Time Dilemma (Xbox): I've done topics for 999 and VLR, so I'll naturally get around to this one at some point. I know it's widely considered the weakest entry in the series.
  • Omori (Xbox): uhh... it's a sad RPG. Maybe a bit like Undertale? IDK.
  • Eastward (Xbox): Earthbound-y I think? I haven't played EB though.
  • Chained Echoes (Xbox): It's styled like a SNES JRPG I believe. I like CT and FFVI, so would probs enjoy this.
  • Dark Souls II (Xbox): I did a topic for DS1, and plan to get through the rest of the trilogy sooner or later. Again, I know this one is considered the worst of the trilogy. Not sure if it'd be best to get it on 360 or XBone, I've been told conflicting things iirc.
  • Final Fantasy Type-0 (Xbox): I haven't played an FF since last summer and I am still intending to get through the whole series. This is the easiest one to get a hold of until the pixel remasters come out so it's here *shrug*

Abyss is my favorite game of all time so it's an easy vote for me.

The game is polarizing, even among fans of the series, but if it lands with people it tends to really land.

13 Sentinels > Chained Echoes > Omori > Tales of the Abyss > TriStrat > ZTD

13S and CE are both amazing.

I only played a couple hours of FFT0, but it wasn't good.

From a fellow Abyss lover... this 100%.

You're playing it and that's final. A playthrough topic will certainly help you with the nonsensical sidequests, which is the only major issue with the game. It's leagues better than Vesperia.

Voted Dark Souls 2.

I think it is From's weakest entry over their golden age of games so far ( Demon's Souls to Elden Ring ). However it's still the best game on this list!

Playthrough's are also interesting on it because it is divisive amongst From's fans so it's always curious where people end up on it. It's level design is a step down overall from Dark Souls, but I get what they were attempting to do, it just didn't pan out. However, I think I appreciate it a bit more after Elden Ring. Dark Souls 2 was a brick that was needed in order for Elden Ring to be built.

Voted Chained Echoes, but there's lots of good choices here. Abyss, 13 Sentinels, and Tri Strat are all great, and I'd rank them in that order.

Eastward is more like a Link to the Past inspired game with some Earthbound weirdness thrown into the story.

Its the 3DS version of Abyss that I own, in case that changes anything.

For DS2, I believe someone told me to get an OG 360 copy unpatched as apparently the Scholars version has worse enemy placements or something? But that would come without the DLC of course, so Im open to any opinions on that.

imo 13s should be played after doing other vanillaware stuff no i'm totally not just saying this to pressure a grimgrimoire topic into happening when oncemore releases soon

all i'm saying is i want somebody other than me to appreciate grimgrimore and it kills me that absolutely nobody that plays 13s or really any of the other games ever does. 13s has had so many playthroughs now but nobody has gone on to try the other games...

13 Sentinels and Tales of the Abyss are both great games. I would probably enjoy a 13S playthrough more.

Zero Time Dilemma is not good, but playthrough topics of that game are always enjoyable.

All great options though.

Some good choices here! Id read a 13 Sentinels, Tales of the Abyss, or ZTD topic, and a few others are games Im potentially interested in playing myself.

I only played Scholars (bought the Trilogy pack like two-three years ago) but I'd say the DLC is definitely worth it. I feel like that's the case in all Soulsborne games though? I guess I'd say it's least important for DS2 but IIRC it still had my favorite fight in the game.

You are asking a lot of me, oof! But if I wind up loving 13 Sentinels I see no reason not to try some of the others.

Gotcha. I would like to play the DLC at some point regardless but IIRC I was specifically warned that the newer version screws up enemy positioning and makes the experience notably worse.

Anyway, looks like it'll be Sentinels or Tales for now. I already own both so that makes things easier for me, but which to go for first... I shall think on this!

Well, it's the only version I played so I can't really say if that's the case. I never experienced the vanilla placements.

Triangle Strategy > ZTD > 13 Sentinels > Type-0

I've played like the first 30 minutes of Eastward and it seems like something I'd place in between ZTD and 13 Sentinels
