Steelrising is really good until it stops being good and I've heard that compared to this for the whole puppet soulslike thing.

No one will ever figure out the true FromSoft formula which is why all the copycats always fall short for one reason or another.

Well its also the difference between eastern and western sensibilities.

This article goes in depth but basically the design philosophy of from is to give everything from monsters to people a bit of goofy charm, some dignified sensibilities to sell them as more than what they are. They also heavily reference Japanese media like studio Ghibli, berserk and even some western medieval fantasy.

What ghibli references are there in Fromsoft's games? I probably know some but I forgot them.

Vanguard Demons face in the original demon souls references the God Warrior from Nausicaa.

Vanguard looks so ugly to me in the Demon's Souls remake. I haven't played it yet, but it'll probably go on sale next black friday so I'll give it a go then, but just... the biggest of ehs. At least they changed the Flamelurker from the awfulness showcased in the original trailer. What a travesty that was.

Honestly, I'm not sure if the Fromsoft formula is really some unassailable complex that other devs don't understand. I think it's more like most of the devs that have tried to imitate it were not particularly competent and inject their own mediocrity. Like was it really so hard to not fill Code Vein with a ton of annoying dialogue and exposition.

Its just different design sensibilities. Blue point thought the way to update vanguard was to give it rhinoceros hide with horns poking out, make it look like a demon from doom and make its teeth look realistic.

In doing that they lost the feel of the original creature.

But I think this game has interesting takes on the Pinocchio story. They even have the rabbit grim reapers in the game.
