But in studying nine billion years of black hole evolution in dormant giant elliptical galaxies, the researchers discovered that the older black holes are much larger than they should be based on those two methods of growth. That means there must be another way these black holes are acquiring mass. Researchers suggest the answer is dark energy in the form of vacuum energy, "a kind of energy included in spacetime itself ... [that] pushes the universe further apart, accelerating the expansion," according to a statement

The idea that black holes are a source of dark energy isn't new. In fact, it's part of Einstein's theory of general relativity. But this is the first time astronomers have obtained observational evidence to support the theory.
"We're really saying two things at once: That there's evidence the typical black hole solutions don't work for you on a long, long timescale, and we have the first proposed astrophysical source for dark energy," said study author Duncan Farrah, University of Hawaii astronomer, in the statement.

That description is confusing. Black holes are getting bigger than predicted because they might be feeding off of dark energy. How does this go from that to black holes are the source of dark energy?

OTOH, it might be related to a theory I sort of heard a few years back. The idea is that there is no singularity in a black hole. Due to a process of the laws of physics, it is impossible for matter to collapse to infinity. Instead, there is a negative pressure that prevents matter from collapsing any further. The tug of war between gravity and this negative pressure puts out a lot of energy, and the more massive the black hole, the more massive the energy. Furthermore, the black hole feeds on this energy, which causes it to grow.

The growing size of this black hole pushes out space-time at the edge of the event horizon. This pushing out of space-time is what we see as the expansion of the universe. As more stars collapse into black holes over time, the rate of the expansion of the universe increases.

Im slightly confused, I thought dark energy was the concept of the energy needed to cause the expansion of the universe in the first place.

As the expansion of the universe is not slowing as would be expected, but instead accelerating with no known or detectable source of energy to power that expansion.

Hence the term dark energy.

This seems circular to my understanding.

Dark matter on the other hand is used to explain the gravitational like effects that give structure to the pattern and placement of galaxies in the observable universe with no known source for such a web.

anyone here able to shed any additional light on this?

Eh, it's pretty tenuous evidence especially considering our patchwork understanding of vacuum energy.

this. good explanation.

i've been telling people singularities are impossible for years. it was a dumb idea that never made any sense anyway. "infinite density, not just really large!".... uh-huh....

you can think of black holes as being so "deep" that they punch a hole in spacetime from which dark energy pours into our universe from the vacuum created by the black hole or from some other source

I was introduced to the theory in a lecture Leonard Susskind was giving about EPR=ER and how this might be an answer to both the black hole information paradox and the firewall paradox. He mentioned that Stephen Hawkings (who was still alive at the time) was also tackling these two paradoxes and then explained it.

Hawkings was championing the idea that there was no event horizon, just an apparent horizon. Matter wasn't squeezed to infinity, but kept in a compact state due to the tug of war between gravity and this negative pressure. When the black hole finally evaporates completely, this negative pressure wins out and the black hole explodes like a nova, sending out all the matter-energy that it had collected in its life.

It fixes the information paradox because information is preserved. It fixes the firewall paradox because entanglement between particles isn't broken since there is no actual event horizon to cross. But last I heard, Hawkings was struggling with making the math work, so it didn't go anywhere.

Well, the negative pressure in the theory is from the vacuum itself pushing out to prevent the infinite collapse. This pressure is borrowed energy from the vacuum. The system stays at 0 energy because it is balanced out by the positive pressure of gravity. When I say zero, I am not talking about actual 0, but rather the minimum energy that the system can be at.
