I mean I didn't know anything about personal finance but at the very least I knew to not spend more than what I have, thats just common sense.
Usually it's the interest that screws people over. Like people that max out cards and then think they're going to pay them off by paying the minimum $25 per month. And then the amount they owe snowballs until they reach a point where the interest is accruing faster than the amount they earn.

People from my high school will share "why don't they teach finance in school!" memes even though we literally did.

There's nothing wrong with teaching personal finance, but "I'm going to teach you how to balance a checkbook" often implies that the problem is the actual mechanics of adding or subtracting rather than poor impulse control or simply not earning enough money to account for expenses. The standard math curriculum teaches exponential functions with the motivation of compound interest and other financial things. People not putting away money in savings isn't due to a misunderstanding of the rule of 70.

It's obviously not common sense lol. People think credit cards are free money.

Common sense tells you theres no such thing as free money. Thats just stupid.

I mean a middle school educated kid would question, "wait how does this make sense that I'm getting free money, who pays then" and figure out that its not free money.

Mine did along with basic cooking/technology skills.

And yet people I went to high school with constantly bitch about how they never learned anything to prepare them for adulthood.

Im ok with it only if you also give an option to take a test beforehand to score out of the class. I teach my kids life skills. Theyd be bored out of their skulls in a class like this.

There should also be a required automotive class that teaches you how to change your oil and car battery and stuff

because I dont know how to do any of that

Watch a few YouTube videos. A class is not needed. I learned how to do that kind of stuff by watching videos.
The hardest thing about changing oil is jacking up the car.
And changing a battery is simple too. Negative first, then positive, all you need is a wrench.

I think it would be better for adults to be offered this class. Allow students a free semester or two of college and make it have classes full of this stuff.

I feel like a lot of kids in High School won't care about this and it would go to waste but it couldn't hurt; this class would've been better than a number of stupid classes I had to take in High School.
