Is Mario"s regular form when he has the super mushroom or when he gets hit?

I always assumed his super mushroom form was his main form, and his little Mario form was him depowered. Apparently it's the opposite?

Tradtionally, Mario started the game small and need a power up to become his "Super" form. But this has largely been forgotten in the 3D games, and in 3D World and Land it is explicitly the opposite.

The original Mario timeline ended with Mario World. The 3D games are actually a continuation of the New Timeline that begun in Mario World 2 where it was revealed that Mario was not from Brooklyn, but born in the world of the Mushroom Kingdom. In the alternate timeline, also known as the Baby Mario timeline, mario actually grows up to be big permanently thanks to regular eating of super mushrooms in his chilhood. In the original timeline, Mario's growth had been stunted due to a childhood spent eating nothing but spaghetti and lasagna.
