Well, it sounds to me like the company will be even more under-staffed, and may need to shut down. No, really, I'd let the worker go and then give the company the ultimatum to either invest in more workers or lose out on everything. No legitimate company can thrive without its employees; and some companies can do just fine without upper management.

Sounds like you'll probably be best off looking for a different company. That's not the most sustainable management strategy, and even if the company does survive, it's really going to suck for the people doing the actual work. No matter what you do in this specific case, it's only going to get worse for everyone.
