I made a topic recently asking about Unity and I've been learning it. Seems pretty intuitive and easy to use but powerful

I've got inspiration for a platforming game that I'm going to try to make, eventually. Trying to stay realistic but I'm working on a prototype level that, if nothing else, could potentially serve to get me a job at one of the game studios in town (that use unity). But the fantasy ideal would be to actually finish a complete game.

what is CE programming/developing/designing?

if nothing else I'll use this topic to document this game I'm working on

I'm helping out with a mech fighter game a bit. Mostly just stepping in to help with the "drier" programming stuff when they need it (dialogue engine, input device management,, etc.)

One of the guys is going to GDC in March, so we're trying to have a prototype done so he can show it off to people there. Its a small team but there's a couple crazy talented people, I like helping out with it

I bought Game Maker 2 a while back before it went to a subscription (I think) so I got grand fathered into whatever that version's capabilities were. Might jump back into that one day.

Probably go back to learning blender and UE5 before I do that though. Mostly for film related stuff but would be cool to design a short game for fun.

Starting with an extremely basic prototype using primitives, I've got a little bit of the the expected layout of my level set up. my character right now is just some free assets I found online, I followed their tutorial to make the guy animate when he runs and jumps, and added a double jump

Yesterday I implemented some spawning platforms that slowly move down (this will eventually be platforms moving with a waterfall)

today I just finished a "trigger" coin that activates various other collectibles that you must collect within 30 seconds to get a reward. if you don't collect them all the challenge resets

this part is fairly easy (imo)

the hard part will be actually turning the primitive design into decent-looking assets. I have no experience with 3D design lol. Probably going to be where I stall out and fail

but another part of me feels like if I make the core of the game good enough, then I can find someone with actual art talent and collaborate to make something real. That's a long way away of course

idk if this really counts, but I'm actually editing a ROM of Pokemon Yellow right now to make all pokemon catchable >_> I'm taking inspiration from Let's Go's encounter list as well as Gen 3 remakes' and Red, Green, and Japanese Blue's encounter locations. And the encounters are only gonna be like 20%-25% at the lowest because FUCK walking around for some 4% encounter rate bullshit. I got a life to live, bro >_>

I'm gonna hex edit the trade evos to evolve by level up and tweak some of the stores to make all the good TMs buyable. Maybe make Pikachu able to learn Surf via HM3 if I can figure that out. I have next to zero programming knowledge lol, I'm just using tools and following hex edit guides. I just want the best and complete version of Yellow I can make.

I'm having a lot of fun with the project so far and it has really improved my CSS skills which I'm always trying to improve. The trickiest part so far has been the header. It took quite a few hours to get everything aligned that well. Surprisingly the easiest was the poll which took like 30 minutes.

After I finish the Board List I'll make CE as a base and create a few other game boards that I can add. When I get done with that I'm going to add functionality.

  1. I'd like to give creating accounts a try.
  2. There will be default topics but I also want a way for the user to create topics / posts.
  3. Check post history.
  4. Since I'll have a base, maybe a way for the user to create their own boards which automatically get added to the Board List.
I also need to create the footer but I'll do that last.

I'm mildly proficient with python, but aside from scripting it's not really the ideal game dev language. Godot is a pretty fun, intuitive platform for getting something running though

Does composition count in the umbrella of game development? If I were to ever contribute to a game that's probably what I would stick to

I'd say it depends on your process. If you're just giving music to a game then nah. But if you're taking input from the designers, trying to compose something that fits then absolutely it's game development imo

some of the stuff is fairly basic if you already know programming, but it does a good job walking you through stuff with videos and lots of sample projects and at the end gives you a certification badge you can put on your linked in or whatever

Yeah that makes sense. There's a really cool segment from a GDC where Mick Gordon talks about composing the Doom soundtrack:

He talks about wanting to "make the sound of Hell energy" and he knocked it out of the park. I think it's a great example of a composer taking that input from the dev team and making an OST that elevates the game to a new level. Like I couldn't imagine Doom 2016 without Mick Gordon's work

That's the route I would want to go as well, really consider what the game is trying to convey, and write music that complements the setting and themes

Just finished an exercise on the unity learn site. This is a prototype where they give you a box and some spheres, and you have to make a game out of it.

So I made a simple "game" where you use the mouse to click and launch the ball towards the moving box. They make it real easy to publish as well, so you can check it out (it's extremely simple, but more of an example of how the unity tutorials teach things, for the curious)

Im taking a pause on this project because I got to the last unit of the junior Unity programmer course and it basically said make a game or something idk to complete the course

so Im making a simple vertical scrolling shooter using best practices that theyve recommended

sort of dumb because Ive had to google things that will undoubtedly come up in later tutorials

oh well, it gives experience and Ive committed it to GitHub which I can share with potential employers

my github is under my real name >_>

I almost have this little project done, or at least the prototype of it. I have a level parser that accepts input of text files with lines 17 characters long (the game width is 8 units in either direction). enemies are spawned based on different characters. I just have one level so far that I've been using. but in theory the game could just keep going.

Might make a few more levels and then implement a boss idk

It's super worth the work no matter what your goals are. Wanna work in the industry? Completed game projects are crucial in your portfolio. Don't want to work in the industry? You've learned a lot about Unity, you've built a game, hopefully you've done stuff that you can reuse in other projects, etc. It's well spent time :)

Working through my second fan mission for Thief 2. I released the first one quite some time ago and while going through early plot for the second it made sense to conceptualize a third, so I plan to rework the first (it still has a few misplaced textures and the like), make the third, then release it all as a mini campaign.

Itll take quite awhile, because Dromed can be fickle as hell sometimes.

Implemented two new enemy types for my shooter game, along with bombs that explode and shoot projectiles in four directions

also made a boss fight and am working on animating its entrance

still need to make power ups but that should be a simple extension of the health pickups, and then maybe sound effects

Clicking New Topic opens a form and allows you to fill in a topic title and a message. Only the topic is displayed (for now) and finally after hours of trying to figure out the format I got the date and sort methods working. I'm off work tomorrow so my plan is to work on creating dynamic pages and displaying the message of the topic I just created.

i learned a lot, particularly about how Unity coroutines work, and also had a lot of practice doing stuff the tutorials had taught

pretty proud of how it turned out tbh. Ill probably post the link tomorrow, its too late to wait for a build tonjght

runs like shit in the web browser though. Works great when I run and build it locally but the webGL build just doesn't have what it takes haha. Some of the movement scripts act funny and it drops way down in frame rate.
