it is, its supposed to be some stupid joke about how HL has some minor flaws yet still reviewed well so it must be some secrecy conspiracy to push an agenda.

IGN did not actually review that film lol

edit: recently I mean, they reviewed it when it came out which is absurd and gave it a good score IIRC which is a problem, but they didnt review it recently unless I missed it

Yeah. But it was also apparently a technical masterpiece which is likely why it is still so well known.

It's one of the most influential movies ever made, but it also revived the defunct Klan AND created their new outfits.

It's also the first full-length motion picture. Everything before it had been shorts.

There's at least 10 full length features that came before it

Its influence on America cannot be understated. Adjusted for inflation it was the highest grossing movie of all time along with Gone with the Wind (another movie that glorifies the South) until at least the late 1970s.

Also, if that is a true picture from IGN I bet its a review another movie called Birth of Nation that came out in 2016.

The 2016 movie is totally different. The 2016 movie is about Nat Turner's slave rebellion. The 1915 movie is about the US Civil War and a totally inaccurate account of Reconstruction that glorifies the Ku Klux Klan.

True that most motion pictures were shorts, but there were other full length motion pictures that preceeded Birth of the Nation.

But the 1915 film Birth of the Nation was incredibly influential in how future films were shot cinematography as well as story telling techniques. It is, however, a racist piece of propaganda.

Aside from its cinematographic merits, it is almost worth watching just to see how absolutely horrifyingly racist it is. Like it's so over the top racist that in 2023 it would seem like a parody of what the most unimaginable racist would believe. It's not like "wow there's a lot of blackface" racist. It's like "black men will rape all of our white women and take over our governments with fake elections if we give them rights and don't unite as proud white men to stop this threat" kind of racist.

It was also the first movie screened in the White House and many members of Congress and the Supreme Court at the time loved the movie. I'm not sure that there's any better insight you can get into the attitude of racism in the late 19th and early 20th century than watching Birth of a Nation and trying to get in the head of someone who agrees with it.

Unfortunately, a lot of early innovation in filmmaking can be attributed to racists, bigots, Nazis etc.. For instance, Leni Riefenstahl (Hitler's hand picked Nazi propagandist) revolutionized documentaries with Triumph of the Will and Olympia. Iirc she was the first filmmaker to use tracking shots in a documentary. Hell, slow motion and aerial shots too.

She made such good propaganda that the US government ordered people to copy her style to a T for their own propaganda.
