Based on that alone...

Fried chicken and cornbread are soul food, and a part of black culinary tradition that most black Americans should be proud of. The same is true for pretty much anything considered "southern" food.

So there is a decent chance that this was put together by actual black people trying to have their heritage represented. I would feel better if they also put collared greens on the menu though lol.

On the flip side, if they also included watermelon and grape soda, then you know they're just racist pieces of shit.

No one is denying what soul food is. It's just that leaning into stereotypes isn't the way to celebrate black culture and we all know that. Or at least, we all have been given infinite opportunities to learn it by now

I'm not saying this is a good thing but I don't think it's necessarily as bad as you say. I don't think we have enough information to say for sure. There is definitely a bad way in which something like this could have been done. There is also an "eh, not great, but not terrible" way it could have been done. Without context we don't know.

But usually when I say this we find out the context and it makes things even worse though lol. I'm not gonna be shocked if TC comes forward with something else more blatantly racist and I have to be like, "Well, yep, there it is. Your school is racist af."

To be fair (even though I'm black) I've never understood why black people still stick with the Christianity and eating watermelon, chitlins, etc. Why do they stick with crap that was given to them as slaves or beaten into them to make them more subservient

So what would be some good Black History Month meals? Most of what I can come up with is like southern cooking but I feel like a lot of that stuff falls into the same stereotypes as fried chicken.

I guess maybe you could go with select African cuisine but I've always thought of BHM as pertaining to American history and that type of food doesn't really fit into that

While I typically think of it as a Southern staple and something that is not offensive on its face, the fact is that culturally it's considered a negative stereotype and anyone who has lived in the US for any length of time should be aware of that. Even if the people who planned the meal out, cooked the food and served it are black themselves, there's a certain of level of "read the room" that needs to be happening here
