It's just such weird optics to do it day one. If it was a week later probably nobody would notice because fried chicken is still perfectly normal food most of the time, it's just really bad timing.

Based on that alone...

Fried chicken and cornbread are soul food, and a part of black culinary tradition that black Americans should be (and most of them are) proud of. The same is true for pretty much anything considered "southern" food.

So there is a decent chance that this was put together by actual black people trying to have their heritage represented. I would feel better if they also put collared greens on the menu though lol.

On the flip side, if they also included watermelon and grape soda, then you know they're just racist pieces of shit.

No one is denying what soul food is. It's just that leaning into stereotypes isn't the way to celebrate black culture and we all know that. Or at least, we all have been given infinite opportunities to learn it by now

If it's a school, it's basically sending the message "We won't teach about CRT, but we sure will teach stereotypes!"

While I typically think of it as a Southern staple and something that is not offensive on its face, the fact is that culturally it's considered a negative stereotype and anyone who has lived in the US for any length of time should be aware of that. Even if the people who planned the meal out, cooked the food and served it are black themselves, there's a certain of level of "read the room" that needs to be happening here

Everyone likes fried chicken. This is such a stupid stereotype and an even dumber complaint. 1) cafeteria menus are revolving doors. You're gonna get fried chicken on the menu at least once every month. 2) are you suggesting to avoid the best items on the menu just so some moron doesn't read too much into it and assume racism?

I'm not saying this is a good thing but I don't think it's necessarily as bad as you say. I don't think we have enough information to say for sure. There is definitely a bad way in which something like this could have been done. There is also an "eh, not great, but not terrible" way it could have been done. Without context we don't know.

But usually when I say this we find out the context and it makes things even worse though lol. I'm not gonna be shocked if TC comes forward with something else more blatantly racist and I have to be like, "Well, yep, there it is. Your school is racist af."

I said "basically". Meaning it could be interpreted that way and not necessarily be intended that way. But tbf, I didn't really set up my sentences airtight. So if you originally interpreted them however, Im not saying it's fault of your own. But now Im elaborating.

I don't really think in definitives. So if anything I said implied something definitive about something I don't know the stories of the people involved themselves, it wasn't my intention. I just talk about how things can be interpreted and how we should be smart enough to avoid doing this by now. At best, it's tone def, like the other user said

So what would be some good Black History Month meals? Most of what I can come up with is like southern cooking but I feel like a lot of that stuff falls into the same stereotypes as fried chicken.

I guess maybe you could go with select African cuisine but I've always thought of BHM as pertaining to American history and that type of food doesn't really fit into that

Watermelons and chicken were used as symbols for black freedom and success before racists took them and turn them into racistic stereotypes.
And they will keep being racistic for as long as you allow them to be, and I dont understand why everybody still allows this over 150 years later.
Good food is good food that everybody should eat.

but its not negatively pushed as a stereotype to other races. Think of all stereotypes. Every race has lazy people, bad drivers, has some kind of bad food, ugly women etc

yet its pushed excessively on certain races. It isnt a rational thing its used to dehumanize a group of people.

Why do racist say black people love watermelon? Everyone does love it but black farmers were successful at farming watermelons so what did the racist white people do? Use watermelon as a negative stereotype to hurt and dehumanize them
