As was said, some people don't want to do multiple playthroughs, so they'll use a guide from the start.

Or they may only look something up when they get stuck (which is the impression I got from the comic. He got stuck so she was helping him).

People with fomo. Some games have missable side-missions and collectables that can't be done post-game, so guides are good for people who don't want to accidentally get locked out and forced into a second playthrough just to see a few things

It depends on the game. Some games have multiple endings, based on choices you make during the game. With only 1 path being the "perfect" path. Some people like to do their first playthrough blind and just see what ending they get on their own. And then they'll go for the perfect ending one the next playthrough. Some people prefer to go for the perfect ending straightaway.

A recent example of that would be Triangle Strategy
