Those CEO up top really think by doing this, people that use the same account will sub their own coz they think users will miss their shows. Which could be the case if they didn't cancel like 90% of shows

lol wtf. I can't imagine password sharing is that big of an issue for Netflix.

I give it like a month before they go back on that. If I can't piggyback off of my family's Netflix, I will absolutely just stop using it.

This is only going to lead to Stranger Things season 6 or whatever being highly pirated.

This is what happens when you're a publically traded company. You always have to show growth or else you piss off your shareholders. Subscriber based model only works up to a certain point, wants you reach that ceiling you have to show your shareholder how else you're going to get more money... by bleeding out more money from your subscribers of course. All this will do is get more people back on the seas.

So here is the thing, Netflix doesn't care if someone not paying for Netflix stops using Netflix. It's the same thing.

Their logic is that if even some of the people sharing accounts get their own that's worth losing however many people who weren't paying anyway. Since they a really aren't a loss anyway.

Yep. The EU at one point tries to suppress a study that proved that.

But the one person who sub will probably stop too because their friends/family cannot use it and doesn't think it worth the money alone.

Me for example. I paid for the 4 screens tier with 4K res. I share it with my parents, my brother and my girlfriend. They are literally family but my parents live in different city. So is my brother. For the price of the 4K tier my parents using it and me is worth the money. If they block access to my parents devices i will definitely cancel because i don't watch a lot of shows.

exactly

they just devalued the service for those 222 million users and raised the price

and stupidly thinking this will increase subs but rather it will make those who actually paid go "why the fuck would I pay for that?"

I'm not saying it's good logic. Nor am I saying the way they are going about enforcing it isn't wildly cumbersome. I'm just saying "Person already not paying for Netflix, threatens to continue doing so" is not exactly much of a disincentive to to Netflix.

I do think there will definitely be a paying customers lost though. I have to imagine Netflix assumes as much as well and just assume the new customers will offset it.

They are losing money right now. Desperation is setting in, and they're going for the only real vector they can actually do anything about in any meaningful timeframe.
This is only going to make things worse, as the people who are paying for accounts under the vague understanding that "grandma, uncle stinky, and billy at college can also watch" decide it's just not worth it anymore.

Netflix isn't actually losing money. They are still turning a profit, and in fact are the only streaming service to do so, but their growth has stagnated.

For years they didn't mind the password sharing because there was still untapped market out there. They were still increasing subscribers every quarter. That's stopped. It's seems like, once you factor in sharing, the people who were going to get Netflix got Netflix. So the only place to turn for new subscribers is to the people sharing accounts. Which is what we are seeing now.

That scenario would make too much sense considering the ship saled LONG AGO to sell Netflix off to Disney or another billion dollar corp.

Netflix probably can't match those prices because as a standalone company, its streaming service actually had to make money.

Apple, Comcast, WB-Discovery, Amazon, Disney and Paramount are all losing pretty insane amounts of money every quarter on streaming services.

Peacock lost nearly a billion dollars in Q4 alone. That's...well not fine but varying degrees of acceptable when you can fuel your cash furnace with money from your other businesses. But Netflix doesn't have that option.

Am I the only one that thinks all of this fuss around password sharing isn't actually going to change much? I doubt the vast majority of customers will stop paying for Netflix just because their friends can't use it anymore, and anyone who had been using somebody else's password is already not paying, so threats to switch to piracy ring kind of hollow because Netflix isn't seeing their money either way.

Likely a lot of customers dropping to the $10 plan, because a second screen is useless if grandma can't watch from her apartment, or Billy can't watch from his college dorm.
