Basically, about half a year ago I decided to leave my current job. Making a long story short, my boss (who I massively respect) left, and there wasn't going to be a replacement for her (even though we all wanted my only coworker to take over) for the next 8 months. Then when they do hire someone, it's presumably going to be external, and, nah I'm not interested. There's other stuff as well, but that's the main thing.

Anyway I've been talking to another company, and I like what I have seen so far. I did an interview with the supervisor for that position, after when I am done with the day. He seemed to like me enough that he said he would tell the recruiter to move me forward in the interview process, in the interview. Woo great.

The problem is apparently it's a whole half a day event, meeting in person with small groups to get a reading on me. I'm assuming that it's during normal work hours, when I'm working.

Do I just tell my (singular) coworker I'm going to an interview? I technically have two managers who I haven't talked to in weeks, and they don't check on us at all. Do they get contacted about me leaving? Should I offer to work on the weekend to makeup lost hours? Am I just overthinking this?

Do you have any way to request time off? That would be the technically correct answer.

If you're working somewhere where that isn't a thing (or if that wouldn't be an 'approved' reason) then - yeah - just work it out with your coworker somehow. You certainly shouldn't miss out on an opportunity because it would be hard for your current position.

Kinda? I submit it to my technical supervisor, who's off doing who knows what.

I would never tell anyone where I currently work that Im interviewing or even looking elsewhere. If that gets back to HR some companies will straight fire you for it.

You should probably tell people "us" the kind-type of job you have otherwise we can't tell you anything useful.

Which is honestly complete BS. Most countries (other than the USA) have laws that prevent employers from doing this.

Request the time off (unpaid, if that's your only option), but tell nobody that you're doing so for an interview until you're certain you've got the other job (even the coworker that you trust). If you need an excuse, make one up, if you aren't likely to have the time approved, fake a sick day.

Many hiring types will accomodate if you request an interview or other hiring-related thing outside of normal work hours. They understand that you have a job and want to hire the kind of person who shows up to work reliably.

If that doesn't work, request a day off in advance. If for some reason you can't do that, call in sick the day of.

Also this. Most companies aren't going to take offense to "I don't want to inconvenience my current employer by trying to advance my career" and may even see that as an asset. Those that do take umbrage might not be so great to work for anyway.

Ok thanks a lot, I've seen a lot of weird recommendations from other people, and this is all actually reasonable.

I suppose I should update:
I'm confirmed for a second, in person, interview. It should next week friday, and I'm planning on planning a weekend trip to Chicago with my SO the next day.
We were planning on a trip last weekend, but then I had to go and go get COVID, and now my SO is sick with the flu. Which people know about, so trying again should be good to get that half day off, or the full day off.
