Is that still a thing? Because I remember in early 2016 trying to get a ps3 because mine died, and there were none available.

Meanwhile I remember ps1 consoles being available well into 2005.

Was that just something that lasted up to the ps2 era and then never again?

Any time a video game company promises support for something for 10 years nowadays, I assume it's a lie.

Sony generally doesn't even deliver on what they promised before a console has even released. They originally promised that the PS2 would have a built-in modem, hard drive, and be 50 times more powerful than the Sega Dreamcast.

Why support a console for ten years anymore when you can hurry the next generation and make more money? It sucks but we're never going to get another console that lasts as long as the PS2 anymore.

It's just annoying because its not like there's backwards compatibility. I'm just screwed out of ever playing ps3 games

PS3 completely stopped production in 2017 it seems. But it seems like it was only for Japan towards the end.

So technically that was correct.

It also depends if by 'support' they mean software support or manufacturing.

It came out in 06, so you were either a little too late, or they were a little too early.

I guess it turned out to be the latter

Support means they will keep making software updates and they did do that for 10 years

I remember reading an article in PSXtreme around late 1999 where some guy at Sony said the PS2 was going to be the main household source of entertainment for years to come.

I'm pretty sure you can still buy a brand-new PS2, in Brazil.

That's actually true.

Now I wonder how long my ps4 pro will last, when I only bought it 5 years ago

Or how long a ps5 will last when I eventually get one.

Although hopefully we've moved away from worrying about hardware failures like red death of ps2 or yellow light death of ps3?
