Proliferation of manga is so easy now that when something is popular, gotta make an adaptation quickly. There's also SO MUCH that you can't skip out on it while there is interest. Whereas it used to be more like 10-20% tops. Also being an adaptation or not has nothing to do with production values. They got localized, they just were direct-to-sale rather than being on TV/streaming/whatever.
