That tends to happen when you have a transitional console, with transitional graphics, and a controller that was very obviously made for fuckin aliens. They can and will be mind-blowing when they release, but will inevitably be made irrelevant once people figure out how to actually make games like that correctly. goldeneye struggles for the same reason MOST n64 games struggle to hold up: the n64 itself. And most of the most beloved n64 games are immediately much better to play when they are ported (with a better control scheme) or remade. The n64 was basically a beta test for 3D gaming. Which is why I would like to try it on Xbox given the Banjo and Perfect Dark treatment. Controls are the least of my worries. Lack of health pickups, odd difficulty alteration choices, bounce back from getting shot being all over the place, and starting every level with barely any weapons hurt the game. Still a good game, but overrated. But compared to modern FPSs, it had a ton of content, replayability, and nice fast action. You could reasonably put 100 hours into just the single player and never really get bored. It's legacy lives throughout the very console fps you play to this day.
